PA's Marlee Starliper runs 9:54 .75 3200 to break PA state record, #8 all time

High school is a small pond compared to the world stage even if you restrict to world junior runners.--if she does not know her 800 pr close to 2:00 or 1500 below 4:05 she will get eaten alive by the Africans or Shelby Houlighan. As great as Paula Radcliffe was--she she not have the turnover to medal. Touhy looks similar --could be a great marathoner or cross country running which are more strength events

Konstanze Klosterhalfen is another non African medal contender. Touhy is great but is no Zola Budd. Not saying it is impossible to reach that level but it seems a long shot.

Touhy's times also appear to have reached a plateau--if you look at what she did last year compared to this year, there is n ot much of a difference. She could have a break through run this summer--do a 15:20 and qualify for the trials--I would not bet on it though.

What are Starliper's 400m and 800m personal bests? If you don't have open results for either, then relay results. Four-hundred metres and 800m results for all track & field athletes are important to know (except jumpers, sprinters and throwers).

For jumpers, sprinters and throwers, we need to know their marathon times.

Verzbicas was 16 years old when he ran that time but he was indeed a freshman.

He graduated two years later though.

In his senior year, Centro ran 8:41 3200 to win the national championship.

No one is trying to compare Tuohy (or Starliper and Starcher) to current and former African and German pros, we are comparing them vs each other and the current high school records. It's great to have a wave of strong competitors and I hope they get to race each other.

Tuohy may appear to have a plateau in this her junior year, but the actual case is that she only ran one race all out during the indoor track season all out, which was the 3000m indoor pro race where she earned the 9:01. She won a lot of other races, including the new balance nationals DMR and 2mile, but these were not all out for best times. What she has really achieved as a junior, is that her new "average race" performance is a 9:50 2mile and a 4:40 mile, as she runs these times now regularly when she needs a strong effort. With this improved "base performance", it will be interesting to see how she does when she peaks for the big meets in June. (The XC runs in Rhode Island and at Holmdel were probably all out efforts, and the recent 4:36 DMR anchor at Penn was probably all out, as she was in come from behind mode.)

On overtraining, I really have to laugh. She's a high school junior with a very balanced life of sports, academics, social life, family and friends. One of her biggest strengths is that she fully embraces "total fitness" vs. just running, and she appears to be getting some good training advice at the local health club. Waking up and going for a run and then going to the gym does not indicate any maniacal commitment to training. The curiosity to try a long run, a local 10k road race, or a half marathon or even marathon just to see how it will go is pretty normal for a high school runner, it's naturally not part of her coaches' training plans though.

So she's not as good as the Africans, she has not peaked yet, and she is not overtrained or overraced.

How much better do you think the Africans would be if they saved room for improvement and didn’t run so much in their teen years? Some of them even reach world class as teens, and that’s probably a big mistake- they should be more patient. You have to save room to grow or else you’ll burn out, right?

Completely different situation, all I know is for the most part the girls who try to be super fast in HS and then go pro it generally hasn't worked out for them.

This is funny. He comes off as a pompous and personally deprived because she did not run the race vs Starliper! And he is bald! Milesplit seems far less professional than Runnerspace, for example.

Starliper just ran a 4:38 1600 all on her own at the PIAA District 3 meet. Rough splits were 69/71/71/67. She crushed Parks, who only ran 4:52, however Parks still has the 800 this afternoon so she may have been saving herself for that.
