Honnestly in 2 hours and change, nutrition is almost a non event. They do take drinks in marathon because they need to hydrate anyway, so why not put a bit of sugar in there just in case.

100miles races are almost eating contests: becoming unable to digest anything is almost the main reason for not finishing or for taking a longer full stop break.

50 miles races are somewhere in between.

Your body cannot store enough ATP to succeed in a marathon, even in the short amount of time that Kipchoge runs it. So fueling is important in the marathon, and while it would be more important in a 50 miler (not sure why you brought up the 100 milers), that doesn't justify going from 10-15s/mile decline you see in other races when the distance is doubled to OVER A MINUTE A MILE SLOWER from marathon to 50 miles. You're kidding yourself if you think it's in the same universe as those boring road race performances.

Lydiard talked about a ultra runner who could run a marathon in x time(forgot the exact time), never any faster. But could turn around and do it again. Some people have one gear and motor all day long at that pace. I'm guessing you have never ran a marathon, which is why you don't understand the accumulative fatigue build up in your legs as the distance progresses.

5K - 4:03 pace

3K - 3:56 pace

1500 - 3:41 pace

800 - 3:23 pace

400 - 2:53 pace

200 - 2:34 pace

100 - 2:34 pace

According to your logic all mid/long distance records are weak compared to 200 and 400 m. The difference in pace between 800 and 400 is whopping 30 sec/mile, much bigger than that between a half and a full.

Sure, but you can look at the other way. If he's run 13:52, he should be capable of 1:03:30 and that means he may have the talent to run 2:11:30. Is it likely that he does it on a hilly course at the trials after spending most of his career training for ultras? Probably not but this is definitely the time to be a US man chasing 2:11 in the trials.

I am well aware of Carlos Lopes. The problem is that Jim is no Carlos Lopes. He is all over the place with his races and preparation. From 100miles down to HM back to 50 miles and a couple of R2R2R runs in between and now going for a 2:11 Marathon time. Not sure if that can work well.

That's a very shallow observation. I never heard him talk about beating Fable, Ward, or Rupp. As with any qualifier you don't go to the trials to "Not" make the team, hopefully to run the best race you can and give yourself a chance (#Mark Conover- 1988 Olympian).

After watching some of the Hoka One Challenge I was very impressed with Jim's running efficiency. He has great biomechanics and bounce in his stride. With a proper training plan which lessens his work load and incorporates the necessary speed/endurance workouts I think Jim can run a very strong marathon and can definitely challenge for a spot on the team. The biggest thing in Jim's favor is that he's mentally prepared to push himself to the extreme. He's definitely physically capable of making the team and if coached properly may surprise a lot of people.

FYI.....I'm not an Ultra Runner or even follow the sport. I'm a retired track, road, and x-c competitor and currently a coach.
