After Randy Peterson got into Boston with a time from Zoom Yah Yah they banned indoor times for qualifying.

Does the Olympic Trials also ban indoor marathon times for qualifying?

Which, considering the crap courses they allow one to qualify on, is hilarious.

Some may argue that Kipchoge is simply too smart to race an indoor marathon. But I contend that Kipchoge is ducking CJ Albertson. Black page time!

Who in their right mind would ever consider running an indoor marathon. Next, someone will be putting together a "watching paint dry" party.

Because lets be real... it takes serious fricken guts to run an indoor marathon. He basically just proved he’s a beast and got paid for doing it.

Actually though he ran it because it was the only way his wife could get him to take a trip to NY.

It feels like the same 3 people are the only ones posting here. 2:18 is not going to get you a sub 2:10 marathon or anything close, there are no sharp turns on a track, no elevation gain, you don’t have to worry about losing distance because of a bad tangent (or because of a long course, which most are), and you get very accurate, regular splits. Other guys have run around the 2:20 mark on an indoor track and not been able to run any faster in an outdoor marathon. Until he runs faster, he’s no better than what he’s actually done. I’d bet my life that he will not qualify for the Olympic Games.

Lol. Slow down there big guy. Probably one of the safer statements you can make. You aren’t risking much. I do think the guy will BTFO of a lot of pros and be top 8 in his first try. You realize he has solo’d Sub 2:17s before in random marathons while in a heavy training block right? He actually hasn’t “raced” anyone yet. When he does I think you will be in for a surprise.

I'd imagine you would say a similar thing about Rodgers in 74. Only if letsrun was around back than.

So I guess you’re point is that anyone can do what Rodgers did? Might as well assume that because one guy in over 40 years was able to make a huge improvement in the marathon from his first 5 races to his 6th, that a bunch of others will do the same. Theirs a reason Rodgers is the only one to have done something like this in 45 years, a 2:18 indoor marathon gives us no reason to believes that’s about to change.

Here's a few other examples:

Dick Beardsley marathon debut 2:47:14, ended up running 2:08:53.

Yuki Kawauchi marathon debut 2:19:26. Current marathon PB 2:08:14.

Yuki Sato marathon debut 2:16:31. Ended up running 2:08:58.

Derek Clayton marathon debut was a bit over three hours. Went on to become the first runner ever under 2:09 for the marathon.

Ron Hill ran 2:24 in his first marathon in 1962. It took him to 1969 to run under 2:10. Mark Conover qualified for the '88 Trials with 2:18 and won the Trials with 2:12.

I don't know if Hodgie san ever checks in here anymore, if so he can verify this, but I'm pretty sure he went from 2:28 to 2:12 and then on to 2:10,,,uh, 59, I think.
