Agree. Orville Atkins once told me that there is no way he could run Boston today because of the size. I suppose I can see why someone would run it just for the sake of its history. The literature is very clear on this, and I’m glad someone else brought it up. Many studies consistently demonstrate around an 8% performance benefit over placebo (water). I would not call this a ‘piece of advertising’. Get your facts straight before you post BS.

I think Radcliffe used something a little bit stronger than carbos to set her world record.
When I started running ultras in 1978 I drank de-fizzed 7-Up and sucked on lifesavers.

Orville and I traveled to Boston together the only time I ran. So it was pretty easy. We even drove the course the day before.

Too bad Orville is gone. What was the biggest field, in terms of numbers, that you can recall racing in?

That year I ran at Boston I think, around 1,500. I ran Tuscon and Twin Cities as a master, about the same. Most of the others, perhaps eight under 1,000.

I am sure there were, but everything was more relaxed but still well organized. Entry fees were reasonable. Gosh, and we raced often, maybe 16-24 times a year was common. Not all marathons of course.
