100% - If, in fact, the incident happened the way Smollett claims, I hope the book gets thrown at the perps. But if it turns out he's lying, he's doing enormous damage to people who are actually victims of hate crimes. It will make it easier for people to call "Crying wolf" for future cases, which may be legitimate. False claims like this also sow the seeds of division and dissent and make our society less civil and harmonious. That, in my opinion, is an even graver consequence.
