This might be one of the more embarrassing things rojo has said. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line when referring to a runner running on an oval track. The only straight line would be on the straightaways and a runner running across the infield on the curves.

with inertia off the curve going into lane two is not a big deal, to get into lane one it takes a bit of energy.
and the math is you draw a triangle from the beginning of the curve to lane two, vs the straight line of lane 1 to finish..
at the end of the day, there's no difference a couple of inches in length vs less braking for inertia from the curve.

it's tough to lean when there is a giant role of tape and an old man standing inches after the finish line. they should ban finishing tape from meets, it's dumb and cost kejelcha the WR.
I believe the tape was positioned a full meter or so past the finish line. He slowed down well before the tape.
He probably got as much publicity missing the record by .01 than breaking it by .38 or something.
He ran out to lane 2 and then back to lane 1. Neither one, obviously, took the entire 40m straightaway. So, he ran further than those calculations indicate. For instance, if for the sake of an estimate we say it is a meter from lane 1 to lane 2, and he went directly from lane 1 to 2 without advancing, he'd have added 1m. If he then returned without advancing he'd have added 2m. So, added distance is somewhere between 2m and around .05m.
Assuming that he took 10m to go 1 m over and 10m to go 1 m back, I get extra distance of 2x.05m or .1m. At his average overall speed of 7.044 seconds that would take .014 seconds, or enough to tie or just break the record depending on thousandths. At his actual speed at the moment, which was higher than his overall speed, it would take a bit closer to .01 seconds. World record tie or slight break was likely with a perfect path.
1 m was a fair estimate for the lane width, which seems to be 1.22m. But doubling that would get you 2.44m, and that'd waste a bit more time with the ten meters to transition to lane 2 and ten to go back that I guessed. So, he might have gotten under the record without that extra distance.

IMO, these comments are overly critical...can't we simply applaud his efforts
