my golden retriever is more than happy doing 5 miles. I dont go further with him because i like to allow him freedom, so for me it is very slow. while i do 5, he probably does 8.
I am sure he could easily do ten - but i think dogs get bored just running in a 'straight' line.
He has big problems running in the sun in the summer. he will just slam the brakes on and lie in the shade panting looking happy but sad.
he is scottish - he cannot handle temperatures above 20C and in only happy below 10C.
he is an amazing dog and companion and very friendly to everyone and utterly trustworthy - which is also important when running.
My experience, albeit limited, was great with goldens. My landlady had one and it would go with me on runs for 7-10 miles, including hills. No leash, it would run beside me. As far as I know, the dog never had any training to do this.
