Maybe its just me, but when was on a podium in HS with my coach, I thought about handing him my medal right then and there, he deserved it more than any of us and what was accomplished was almost entirely a result of him and his sacrifices.
I would rather see the coaches only on the podium, if its one or the other, for CC.
My point is that JG shouldn't find this to be so crazy. It definitely doesn't warrant all caps. He mentioned it in his write-up and in this thread.
Wetmore doesn't go on the podium. That's it. Nothing crazy about it, it's just the way he rolls.

I know that's the way he rolls. But I figured he might want to at least WATCH them get the trophy -- his first women's team title since 2004. Guess not.
So lets see, Mark Wetmore puts all his scholarship money into distance running and has a terrible track team. John McDonnell won 11 NCAA cc championships, 19 indoor titles, and 10 outdoor meets. A total track team. GOAT
1. Wetmore does it w/o importing foreign talent, so I really like that aspect of how he approaches it.
2. Very few schools fully fund a full track team. It's why schools get divided into distance OR sprint schools, rare is the school that is balanced. So if you're the only school with a full track team it's not easy, but it is certainly easier to win a track title then if people are working with partial scholarships.

Why give an interview if you really don't want to go that's what it sounds like Mark just being a prick you know nobody makes him give the interview it's not like the NFL at the Super Bowl where you have to give an interview
or you get fined.....I think Mark just likes enjoys being a prick.... the really tough guys just don't give any interviews.

This interview is not so very different from others he has given at nationals in the past. I think--but I'm far from knowing--that at competitions (especially cross) he is really intense, and cannot be around anyone other than his athletes. However, when he is interviewed on campus--that are several that Flotrack has done--he is much more relaxed and forthcoming. Nevertheless, I think he's probably a fairly reticent and private guy overall.
What I'd be interesting in learning is how his training methods differ from, say, fifteen years ago. The long run is, of course, unchanged, but I remember hearing him say that his runners do more intensity now than years ago. This would be worth asking about, as well as questions about peaks, tapering, gym work, the role of the captains, and Heather Burroughs' role in coaching the team.
Maybe he was tweaking Mike Smith for saying it is about the team. Indeed, it is wrong to say that xc is just a bunch of individuals. We all run better with others, especially our team members, though it would be foolish to ask a 29 flat guy to run his race with a 30:10 guy in a 10k national championship. Packing it up is key to most team xc championships.
Very cool interview! I love how Wetmore seems to genuinely respect his runners as individuals and adults and tries to make it all about them. Good questions and good answers... Wetmore’s rapid fire style allowed a ton of ground to be covered in 4 minutes and Mr. Gault did a great job of keeping up!
McDonnell blurred the lines of his role with Arkansas' admissions and financial aid offices to get more guys in on non-athletic scholarships to fudge around scholarship limits. Wetmore doesn't play that dishonest crap.
I’ve known Wetmore for 35+ years, he is animated insightful and funny.
Gault pulled none of that out of him.
Maybe Wetmore has and LRC thing, like most coaches.
I’d just like to know how Ryan Forsyth went from the 60’s or so last year at NCAA’s to 11th this year. Would’ve been an interesting story about the senior.
I thought the interview was uncomfortable just because JG didn't read the subject well or know what motivates Wetmore. If he would have asked better questions he might've opened up more.
