I fact checked the man. He is correct. "For each men's event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 20 declared student athletes will be accepted into the competition." Yes, I made sure I read the indoor manual. However, it does not say anything about instituting a prelim for the 3k. I do not know whether or not that is true.
The prelim for the 3k was what I was primarily referring to. I checked the manual too and saw that they increased the field to 20 athletes per event.
Number of athletes is increasing to 20

I cannot provide you any evidence, but I will say that I am 100% certain that there will be prelims of the 3k at Nationals.
Obviously me saying that I was at the meeting where this was decided will not satisfy you, since I could just be making that up, but I promise that for better or worse there will be prelims of the 3k.
5k goes to Patel and 3k goes to Gearinger, just like last year. In the mile I feel like Matteucci will probably take it.

How do you guys feel about Jeremy Hernandez jogging the 3k and finishing above 9 mins at nationals last year? I realize that he had just won the mile but the man bumped out the 16th guy to just to extend his victory lap

If you were watching the race at all, you would have realized that he raced over 2k of it. He was in the top 8 for most of the race. When the field started moving toward the end, he was too dead to go with, at which point he gave up. It most certainly was not a victory lap. When the crowd started to stand up and clap, like they always to for the guy limping in at last place, he did the throw-cutting motion to signal people to stop cheering for him. He tried to pull a double and just didn't have it. No shame in that.
