Yuki is a low mileage, low intensity runner. Everyone assumes he's a maniac because he does so many "races." He actually uses most races as workouts. If you look at the paces, the races he's doing are often no different from the faster long runs that other marathoners are doing. This approach to racing isn't that different from what a lot of Americans were doing in the glory days, which probably isn't a coincidence (when you work a full time job, it's easier to get in your hard efforts in a race than by yourself, at a track, before dawn, on a workday).
