No need to drink and drug yourself to death over it, old guy. Heroin is bad for your teeth.

You use my real name again, and I'll hunt you down. Punk.
As a female who graduated from H.S. in 1992, I may have a bit of a different perspective. But, I ran mostly with the boys on my team starting in my sophmore year. As a girl I probably ran fairly high miles (40-45); for my male training partners that was probably average. But, I think the key is that we were still versed in the LSD (long slow distance) theory of training at that point. Even in college when my 5K PR got down to 17:05, I still rarely ran longer type runs faster than 8 minute pace. The focus for my H.S. team was getting just getting in the miles and and we left the quality stuff for the track. I don't think all runs need to be run at a hard pace. There need to be some days designed to let the body actively recover. But, I do think that long tempos, thresholds, and pace runs (yes with a watch running) have their place in helping today's runners get to the next level.
You guys mention that the guys in the 70's did tons of mileage. But what did they do for hard sessions? What kind of track sessions?
