You could say the same thing about Japanese marathoners who almost never race abroad. African runners mostly race London/Berlin or other European marathons -- more money and more convenient to travel to than American marathons.

You seem to have a problem with the sport being professional. Professional marathoners ALL chase the money, not just Americans. The Africans run for money, period. They don't care about medals, records (unless there's a record bonus) OR competition. If they could run 2:20 and win they would just as soon do that as run 2:03. But there are a lot of Africans chasing a limited amount of money so running fast at the big-money marathons is necessary. That's the marathon as it stands now.

No, they aren't playing it safe. "Most" who are going for it don't have full-time jobs. They need $$$ and are trying to figure out the best way to get it. If someone gave Shalane $50,000 to race and prize money and someone else gives her $5000 and prize money, where's she going to go?
I live in the midwest. I was at a small 10k and who runs by me warming up, Tim Hacker. Why? There was $2,000 for 1st place and he drove in from Wisconsin the night before. He didn't drive that far for just a quick 1st place, it was the money.

I’m in the minority here with Desi. Majority think she’s best suited for a challenging course aka NY or Boston.
However, she’s like a little metronome. One might think if she locks into a 2:21 rythym she could likely run that.
Doesn’t mean a bigger payday, but if her objective is the run a top tier works time, then her routine of Boston and NY are not going to get her there.
Wonder what her Cox thinks?

No no no... it was Two Thousand Thirteen.
Haven't read the thread, but this makes sense because NY will give her the biggest pay day. There is a decent chance she runs fast enough to get a spot on the worlds team if she wants it. It would make sense for her to do NY-Boston-Worlds. I wish she'd run London or Dubai and we'd see her get further down on the all time american list, but doubt that ever happens.

I take off mondays to watch Boston. I always get up early to watch NYC.. London, Berlin.... I don't even know the race happened til I see the results.... and Tokyo has a marathon?
Scorpion, your passion is appreciated, but these are professional runners making a living and trying to make bank in their limited athletic prime. They have to chase their best chance at dollars, more than anything. This is not some pure, amateur pursuit that we want it to be. Chasing times and the best competition is admirable, but it may not be the most economical decision, especially if you know that you can't run 2:03 or 2:15 pace that we are seeing at London and Berlin these days.
By the way, you should be an Amy Cragg fan, she has went for it a lot over the past couple years.

They dint want to finish 3-5 minis back and maybe miss the money.
NYC , falls off very quickly after the first 5-7 athletes.
Des did a package deal by running other NYCRR events.
She gets paid for running and showing up, great way to cash out on the Boston win.
I'm amused by the guy who asks why Americans don't run "the true top marathons," by which he means, in the fall, Berlin. When Sammy Wanjiru was winning Chicago, did you not consider that a "true top marathon." Do you think NYC Marathons with Geoffrey Mutai at his best and Mary Keitany at her best were not "true top marathons?" Berlin has had its records but it's NEVER been deep. In any case, didn't Shalane Flanagan get third place there not so long ago?
