I like the pics of the girls where their mouths are completely shut, and they are running in full makeup. Come on.

Give the pro runners a break, they are expected to do that as part of their contact. I know many and most are reluctant to post a lot, but they HAVE to or they lose out on the $$.

Now the typical Joe Blow that has to post every time he goes out on a trail... that's just narcissistic behavior and no need to follow anyone like that.

The worst part: They often put the distance and pace of their runs on the picture and in small print you'll see it was a workout that they're treating like a continuous run. For example they might say they ran 3 miles at 6:10 pace, but you look at the small print and see they did 12x400 in 92.

Sam Parsons is arguably the worst about being extremely vain with Instagram self promotion. You want to root for the underdog, but it becomes difficult when the underdog has a big instagram ego.

They are the worst. They are always popping up on my feed so I can't avoid them. My least favorite is trackclubbabe and her 100% posed pictures. She's one of those that runs with a full face of make-up and sometimes with her mouth closed.

Has anybody heard of the rambling runner podcast? It's some guy that interviews all of these instagram hobby-joggers.

This is all good stuff. The bad stuff is the people who post the exact same 3 pictures (thumbs up, staged action shot, quad stretch) on a rotation, with pace details in the corner of the photo that suggest that they're running a hard workout every other day.

I've had the idea before how to join the ranks of these fools. I like to wear flannel shirts on longer runs in the wintertime. I could start an account called THE FLANNEL RUNNER or something, and every post would be the thumbs up photo with the flannel shirt I was wearing for that run. But I'm not going to do that, because I'm not a stupid person.

YES.

Yeah, I've gotten to know Patrick a little bit and he is a genuine and good guy. He posts too many shirtless pics, but i have posted a shirtless pic here or where and if I actually had any muscle on me, I'd probably do it more often. Also, as a general matter, I have some sympathy for folks who are doing this as part of how they make their living. That's a slightly different animal to me than those who are just vain.

It seems like a lot of the pro runners are contractually obligated to whore themselves out on Instagram, so they probably can't help it. That's a far cry from a nobody, never-was (like me!) posting daily selfies of their morning jog.

Honestly, I find social media generally exhausting, so I try to stay away from it as much as I can.

My favorite among these is the instagram runners who fake their progress / material. check out skeeterstephens, he claims to be on the road to Tokyo2020 and to have done these insane workouts.

His workout pictures have been the exact same for almost 3-4 years now, it is next to impossible to find any of his so called race times (with the exception of a Shamrock run that was almost 20 mins).

Every time he has a race, the morning of he makes a post explaining how the airline fudged his shoes or something happened on his travel or some nonsensical delay / injury and that he'll be back soon.

Idk how he gets sponsorships if half of them are any real, or if any of the coaches on his instagram are real, but he gives me a real laugh everytime i see him post.

Easy solution: realize that social media all about attention, self promotion, envy, ego satisfaction, and a bunch of other stuff that is not guarantted to make us happy. Then log off.
