There's not much available space on campus for a track. It would be hard to build one even if they wanted because it's right by the river (with a running path) and then surrounded by the town. Being a Jesuit Catholic school with small classes, Gonzaga has an amazing sense of community that a big state university can't compare with. Also, with no football team, maybe there's more scholarship money to spread around.

Perrin came in with a 9:04.35 3200 at the state meet senior year. Mwaura just went 8:46. Not exactly the same caliber runner as Mwaura.

So instead of talking about these James Mwaura or Jake Perrin characters, why don't we shift the conversation over to Javier Munõz-Maines? I heard this kid ran a 3:39 1500 split at UW this indoor year but the officials miscounted and made him run another lap!

They just built a beautiful new student athlete center with a second basketball center/gym and yet they can't find money for an track (outdoor or indoor). They should have called it what it is, the new basketball center. It is like a big middle finger to Tyson. He does a lot with the little he gets but this shows how the school values xc/track...it is nowhere close to fully funded. Don't see it changing anytime soon when all their revenue is created by the basketball team.
Let's face it, basketball brings in the money, T&F costs money. Pretty simple really.

This is true - the kid’s a horse. Though redshirting both cross country and outdoor track this year, he made it clear this indoor season that he’s at Gonzaga to win. Even after an injury ridden redshirt cross country season and a weak Achilles he was nearly able to punch his ticket to indoor Nattys. Had he not miscounted the laps I heard he was going to run 3:58ish, which would bring Gonzaga their first sub 4 mile. Kid’s thick and quick. James, Jake, Javier... J or whatever! They’re all about to rewrite the history books.
I wonder if Tyson is in consideration for a position at UW?

Even if he was, he’d never leave. People go from UW to GU not the other way around.
UW to GU is a rich pipeline: Dan Dickau, Sumner Goodwin, Nigel Williams-Goss, Molly Foster, the list goes on and on!
