When I first saw the headline that Rupp is now a 2:06 guy, I shrugged because I figured he probably finished a minute behind the leader. 2:06 low is a good line to put on his resume but the big news is that he keeps winning. Discounting the DNF in Boston and only 3 men have beat him in his marathon career.

But it's hard not to expect people to think this way when this website pushes the American born narrative down our throats. Rupp ran great today. Garbage. That is not a real statistic no matter how much you try to make it be. This is a country where the only indigenous people are Native Americans. Rupp is no more or less American than KK. KK is the American record holder. We can be excited about Rupp's run without having to get all white pride up in here.
If you run one time many, many times (2:09-plus) and another time once (2:06-plus) then you are officially the 2:09 guy since that is the time you usually run.

times are always coming down so we can only compare performances to other runners of the same era. On that metric, Shorter is hard to beat. His record from 71 to 74 is Kipchoge-esque: he entered and won all five of the most prestigious marathons in that span (4x Fukuoka + the Munich Olympics). By this metric Shorter's is in competition with Abebe Bikila and Eliud Kipchoge for the overall GOAT. However, in Shorter's day the best distance talent was on the track so Rupp gets bonus points for running in an era where distance talent is concentrated in the marathon. But he may loose some those points for the general sketchiness of Salazar's NOP.

Wait, what?! You can still root for a guy who isn't from your country!! Kipchoge and Bekele are my favorite athletes period, and I spend tons of time watching and rewatching their races. I could care less what country they're from, and love it when they lay down the hammer even on an American. I'd still feel strange rooting for them as Americans, just as I would rooting for Farah as a Somalian. My quick proposal would be to make the cutoff 16-years-old, even 18. If we don't have any cutoff, it becomes less clear why we don't just have races between rival shoe sponsors instead......they're starting to control where guys race and at what pace anyways.
I agree, beautiful race and he judged it perfectly. That's how you are supposed to run as a pro, even splits instead of running 61 like a madman and then trotting a 68.
The streets of Prague aren't very fast neither, being an ancient city, I was there 6 months ago and it takes a tool on you.
He should be able to run the AR in a Berlin/Dubai course if he races smart like today.

Who cares what or who states that Khanoochi was the American record holder. For myself and other rationally thinking people, Hall was the American record holder, and that is now Rupp. Perhaps Meb could have been, since at least he moved here when he was young, and developed here, but in no damn way is KK the American record holder!!!

Agreed. And we need to say the same thing about Khalid K's races. When he was running his 2:05s, they were World Records.
Still, good on Rupp for going fast and winning. I think he should try for some faster stuff like Berlin. And I think he's a favorite for Tokyo 2020.
But like Shalane and others have said, I'm just not excited about NOP. Same goes for the Africans who throw down ridiculous times/performances. It makes it hard to be a fan. And it is one of the reasons I'm more excited watching people try for the OTQ than I am in watching the actual qualifiers in the Olympics.
Great time but nobody should be suprised that Rupp could run 2:06. Without having seen the race or knowing anything about the conditions or course I would have said for certain he can run low 2:05 or high 2:04 and that's just based on his Olympic performance.
A lot of posters here just don't give Rupp the respect he deserves.
If you forget all your NOP/Salazar prejudice and look at his performances on paper, he's just quality. 3:50i, 7:30i, 12:58, 26:44 and now 2:06. Olympic Silver in the 10k and Bronze in the Marathon 4 years later.
Guy is just a top, top athlete and all his competitors know he's a threat.

Not a chance, the conditions in Boston were much worse than it looked on TV. And it looked pretty bad on TV. You couldn't really "see" the wind except a few moments when umbrellas went rolling by.
