People here are so dumb. We're not criticising the kid!! Or his coaching!! We're simply saying let's not wet ourselves cause a sophomore with elite parents ran a 4:11 mile. If he's trained like a pro in HS, by former Pro-Parents, he might not have a big step-up when he goes to college. Whereas kids who are coached in HS by coaches who don't know what they're doing (or - like my coach - prioritise academics over athletics), often show much bigger improvements once they get proper coaching.

Maybe having a set of smart parents who know the ropes like his, he is actually training for the long haul instead of for some short term glory. Maybe his parents and coach are prioritizing academics and he is just really fast.

Carrozza is the son of Sheila Carrozza, who made the 3000m usa team back in 1993 IAAF world championships.

Does his school go to Texas Relays a lot? Or did they do it because Alan is from Texas?

And did I see his best before today was 4:21?

Even if 4:00 is the new barometer of high school miles I don't see why this run wouldn't interest you. Looks like the upside is tremendous. But even if he never runs faster, it's cool to see a kid of someone a lot of us know or know of running fast.

Posters who only care about sub 4:00 mile HS times are not true fans of the sport.

What "we" don't understand is your obsession with putting young runners down. It seems you were a failed young runner and--like chicken little--you "know" the sky is falling.

From my perspective: No one in this thread had even mentioned anything about “future expectations” or “potential” in the first few posts. That isn’t what the excitement was about. The OP just happened to shared a fun result that others also found interesting. Then, the dude I responded to started raining on the parade. Now, you’re defending him. What gives?

"Cruz" is a little cringe, but ElCaballo Culpepper would of been dope AF.

Cruz goes to Niwot High School. Same high school as Elise Cranny, just north of Boulder. They regularly produce studs. Kelly Christiansen coaches the distance runners, and is a great coach. Has had success at a couple Colorado high schools. I guarantee Cruz is practicing with his teammates at regular high school practice. I'm pretty sure Maurice Henriques is still the head coach at Niwot and he is an incredible coach. Coached Sarah Cocoa at Fairview, Elenor Fulton, Elise Cranny, tons of state champions. Niwot girls have been a 4A powerhouse, and Boulder county champs consistently.

Good thing for his development is that he's not even the best distance runner at Niwot so he has an upperclassman to look up to.

Get real here. 4:11 1600m in March as a sophomore is fast. A few years ago, the record for a sophomore in the mile was 4:06 for Jeff See. Not sure if that has been superseded. On this list from a few years ago, 4:13 for the mile would be top 30 all time for a sophomore. He just dropped ten seconds off his best. I would not be surprised at all if he runs close to 4:06 for the mile this year, given the opportunity against top competition at the end of the season.

Of course, it doesn't matter all that much what he runs this year. What matters more is what he runs by the end of high school, more still what he does in college, and the most of all as a pro, so many years to come here and I wish him and his family good luck. I recall that his father would forego much of the European circuit during his heyday when he really needed to race against top competition to sharpen for championships because he regarded staying home with family as more important. While I believe that taking the kids to Europe would have been great for them, the early returns suggest that his prioritizing of his family was a good decision.
