Bump
Anyone know what fonseca does now?
I see somebody mentioned Rice. They have four 2:10:xx alums, two of whom (Jeff Wells and John Lodwick) were there at the same time.
Wells made headlines for nearly stealing Boston Billy's thunder on his home turf in 1978 with a monster come-from-behind charge down Boylston Street that left him just 2 seconds shy (Rodgers 2:10:14, Wells 2:10:16). The motorcycle escort didn't notice Wells coming and briefly cut him off in the final strides or the race might have been even closer.
Lodwick sports a PB of 2:10:54, taking it out fast (2:08+ pace) in the 1979 Nike OTC race, only to be caught at mile 23 by Wells and Tony Sandoval, who tied in a then loop course AR of 2:10:20. Lodwick held on gamely for 3rd and also finished 3rd (2:12:??) in the 1982 Salazar/Beardsley epic Boston race. He also set a Dallas White Rock record (beating training partner Wells) with 2:12:18.
Marty Froelick arrived on campus the year after Wells and Lodwick left and translated his 9:01 high school 2M credentials (also 14:29 and 30:23 as a prep) into a few Southwest Conference titles, NCAA appearances, and a solid post-college career as a roadie, with 47:59 10M and 2:10:59 marathon bests, the latter winning at Twin Cities in 1987.
Sean Wade came to Rice on a tennis scholarship and began running track his Senior year, eventually persuing a marathon career, notching a 2:10:59 best (4th at Houston) and representing NZ in the 1996 Olympics. Wade is almost as well-known as a beer-miling animal (5:40.0) as he is for his marathon accomplishments!
There's also Jon Warren, now coaching at his alma mater, who ran 8th in the 1996 Olympic Trials race in 2:15:59 (the race in which Bob Kempainen will be remembered for more than winning).
Mike Novelli (XC and track All-American at Rice in the late 70s, with a 13:36.90 to his credit, and a teammate of Froelick) deserves a mention with a 2:19:20 as his lone marathon attempt.
I believe he's a politician in Toronto.

Nick Whiteside 2:25
Chuck Elliott 2:26
John McInerney 2:27
peaches, i think phil lockwood ran ~2;22 at rocket city in the early '80s.
also, didn't joe run the 2;15 wearing a walkman?
Add Bob Busby tot he SDSU list...he ran 2:18 I believe...
Also how good would Western Kentucky be...
Joe Sheeran (from 1977 Division II XC Champs Eastern Illinois) ran 2:15 at Dallas White Rock around 1983.
I watched him run 2:16 at the Lake County Marathon in Illinois in 1983, and he was carrying an oversized transistor radio to keep him company. His 2:16 that day was literally a training run.
I'm not sure how fast Phil Lockwood ran at Rocket City? I know his training partners from Peoria (Greg White and Glen Latimer) ran 2:23 at Rocket City, and once again this was about 1982 or 1983?
From Bucknell, I think several other guys got into the 2-teens
Brian Harshman
Jeff Morganti
Rich Stark
Ray Sullivan may also have hit the 2-teens, but not in the marathon (sorry Sully, couldn't resist).
Throw Kyle O'Brien in there since he just ran 2:20 this past year...not from the 1970s, but from EIU.
