Flotrack Monopolizing NCAA Coverage - Charging $29.99 for D1, D2 and D3 Nats - Will we ever get anything free anymore!?!?

Update: Ok. The coaches association has helped me out. Flotrack is doing this as a partner of turner sports so therefore it doesn't have to be free. It says, "In a partnership with the NCAA and NCAA Digital -- managed by Turner Sports." It's interesting to note the last line of the press release says, " Turner Sports has announced plans to launch a premium sports OTT platform in 2018."

I don't have an issue if this was part of Turner, or ESPN - stuff I already pay for. I get there needs to be a reason to buy cable.

Or it could be nobody thinks you should have to pay $30 for a hamburger from McDonalds. The catch is that McDonald's bought the rights to be the only one allowed to sell food, so their crappy $30 hamburgers are the only option if you want to eat.

I've been saying for years that the only way around Flo-bro's over charging for mediocre coverage is for a viable contender to emerge that offers a superior product. I'd say Letsrun could crowd-source a way to produce their own coverage (the structure/potential viewership base is there), but it wouldn't be easy or cheap. And then you would still have to produce something worthy of making the NCAA change their minds on distributing broadcasting rights (and if flotrack has Turner on board, good luck). Plus I'm not sure the NCAA wants to affiliate itself with some of the crap posted on these message boards.

It's more like this: The government was giving out free hamburgers. Then McDonald's came in and started giving out tons of cheeseburgers. Then McDonald's started making you pay for their cheeseburgers. Then McDonald's started buying ALL of the government's free hamburgers throwing some cheese on them and selling them as cheeseburgers.

It would be awesome if someone did this on YouTube. You could make a new account just for the men's and women's races, so when you get the cease and desist, the account just shuts down. Could it happen in less than 30 minutes?

While I'd love it for the personal joy of being able to watch it, it would be even more fascinating to see how many people watch it i.e. How many people are coming from this thread looking to watch the race but otherwise wouldn't pay $30 for it? 1000? 10000? More?

It's amazing. Mark Floreani thinks his business model is better than ESPNs.

“We cater to the in-depth,” says Floreani. “And I think [in the near future] you’re going to have a harder time getting people to pay for the surface-level. So I think it pays to be authentic, it pays to be substantive. I think in the end, it’s a better business model. But you’ll always have both.”

People aren't really cutting ESPN. They are cutting cable in general and ESPN is a big part of cable. And guess what, if they are cutting it it's because they view it as too expensive - and ESPN is like $7 a month . So he thinks he has a better business model when he charged $29.99 per month? How many parents are willing to do that for these obscure events?

Floreani's ego is pretty amazing. Check this quotes out from another article I just found:

"Let's say [ESPN] had the DNA and they said, 'You know what? We want to disrupt ourselves. We're gonna eat shit for three or four years, but we're gonna be around 10 to 15 years from now'--I don't even know if they would be able to do it."

Or, as Floreani declares to his Hashtag audience, "when I think about our competitors in five, 10, 15 years, I don't think about ESPN or any of the traditional broadcasters. I'm thinking about Amazon, I'm thinking about Facebook, I'm thinking about Google. Why? Because those companies know how to use and drive their businesses from data."

My goodness. So he thinks by streaming an event a couple thousand people want to watch even if it was free that he can take on amazon?

People act like ESPN is doing horribly. They still made more than $1 billion last QUARTER. But I don't get the logic of ESPN is too expensive at $7 a month - let's charge $29.99 a month.

Does anyone else think a PPV would work for each race for FLOtrack? Like pay 5-10 dollars for each race??

They are spending some good money on PR people but are burning cash.

Keep in mind a lot of people who are not watching ESPN are still paying that $7/month. If Flotrack could charge thousands of people who are not watching it money then the cost for those who do watch it would come down.
