In reading this, it reminded me of a local triathlete who drowned doing underwater laps alone. He simply went a little too far and lost conscience. I don't know if that is something that David did. Not that it matters anymore. Simply something that should be avoided.
David was surely always entertaining when he ran. Not afraid to be in front. He should be remembered for that. I'm happy that he got to experience the Olympics.

The fact that he got to experience being an Olympian somehow makes me feel a tiny bit less devasted. Shockingly sad, ugh. Life is SO short. Let's keep our regrets list even shorter.

Ballsy runner too. I still remember the 5k from Payton Jordan about 5 years ago. Lamong miscounted laps and kicked way too early. Everyone else held back but Torrence went with him from 700 meters out. At first I thought they both miscounted laps but David Torrence didn't, he just ran with some nuts and went for it from 700 meters out. That took some courage. You don't see that kind of racing too often.
RIP David Torrence.
He was so near and so far from that breakthrough to take him the top of the game. Very sad.

Very sad, obviously. I didn't know him, but followed him from a distance. Didn't really know the story until I watched the video just now.

Hard to believe any talk of suicide. I just don't see it. What I see is a guy who just ran a killer workout, wanted a seriously cool swim in the pool, was very tired, miscalculated, and accidentally hit his head. A tragedy, plain and simple.
This sucks.
David was one of my favorite runners ever since I read the Downhill Mile thread back in the day. I commented on it in 2005 about how awesome it was and then bumped it again in 2012 after David got the 'A' standard.
Man, he was a good dude to follow and root for. Terrible loss.

i saw him in the track yaterday during that final workout. sadly i didn't know who he was, but damn he was fast. i figured i'd eventually figure out who he was. i wish i hadn't found out this way.
stunned...a great runner and by all accounts a good person. He will be remembered.

2. Was he a partier? That greater Old Town area is a huge party scene. Lots of drinking/drugs and swimming after the bars close.

I interacted with David at indoor nationals in either 06 or 07 and then various occasions on social media. Nice guy that deserved a longer time on this Earth. I am truly saddened to hear this news.
Nothing certain at all, but judging by the way a lot of pro runners & people within the running community are tweeting about it, I'd have to guess that it was a suicide
David was a hero and inspiration to many, myself included. He was genuine, good, and worked hard, really hard. He has a kick ass strava work out from the day before titled "quaters of death" what a horrible and dark allusion. The time for us all is soon enough, sadly sooner for some than they deserve, he would want us to make the most of the time we have. May careful thoughts be sent to David, his loved ones, and those in the Cal Track family and beyond that will miss him.
