I remember watching this show where they'd put two ancient types of warriors in a virtual simulator after testing their moves/weaponry on dummies for impact, effectiveness, etc. Don't remember the name of the show.
Anyway, there was this barbaric dude who used to put people who were alive, or barely alive, on posts. The kicker? He'd shove it up their arse hole and stood it straight up in the ground. People would then slowly die due to gravity making the posts slowly impale their organs.
Appearently, people would find a whole field of like 50 dudes with this done to them so people would be afraid of war with him.
Gruesome way to die. No way to get yourself off the post. Freaks me out.
I think the guy you are referring to is the famous 'Vlad the Impaler' who the story of Dracula is based upon.
Apparently, stories like this about him were greatly exaggerated. In real life he should be one of the heroes of Christendom and European civilization as he almost single-handedly stopped the advance of the Ottomans at a time when it looked like they were going to steamroll the entire continent for Islam.
As far as the original question is concerned, I've read that being burned alive is actually quite quick as far as the pain is concerned as the nerve receptors are killed quite rapidly. Unfortunately, in your final moments you're breathing in your own burnt flesh - this is how coroners are able to determine if a dead burnt person was still alive when on fire (through examination of the lungs).
