Mac is only 58? He looks closer to 70.

that would be market intervention. By Trump? No?!?
I was a pathetic D1 college tennis player and I used to beat women ranked as high at #100 in the world. I would have never been ranked on the ATP which means that I would have ranked lower than 1500th in the world. I believe John McEnroe's statement to be true.
I have a friend who beat several women in the top 100 in the world, easily too and his best ranking was around 1200th on the ATP. He asked Serena if he could play here in a set and she categorically refused! I doubt she would be ranked much higher than 700 on the men's tour. It's not about power but movement and also spin. Women hit much flatter than men. Men can hit harder and with a ton more spin than women.

I've wondered if they made females have to play five sets during Grand Slams that a different type of female tennis player would emerge, sort of a cross between a heptathlete and w400 hurdler.

Serena would have won a lot less if they had played 5 set matches and the likes of Wozniacky and Errani would have won a lot more. Serena is not built to last more than 2 hours!
Well, applying this logic to boxing, where would you rate Floyd in the best boxer rankings?
Not in the top 500, I would guess.
So why was he the top paid boxer in the world?
This is insanely dumb thread.
It has nothing to do with "mental toughness".
Men are faster and hit harder. Serena wouldn't be able to return 75% of a top 1000 male players' first serves. This would make her get bageled in every set.
Why this is controversial, I will never know. It doesn't make Serena any less of the best female tennis player ever.
Even the Mother Jones commenters think that his comment was generous.
Why any sportswriter would say otherwise is beyond me.
