Doug Schmenk ran mega miles - 7286 : 7288 : 8060 for three years in a row
Mark Covert had three years at or near 6,300, years close together but not in succession
Dave White ran big miles too but I have no numbers
Another big mile guy from that team was John Casso - who finished 16 or 17 in NCAA University Div and 11th in AAU champs. Very talented and a hard worker ... as was most of the team.
There were several other guys who ran at near 2:20 but shortly after grad college.

Scott Daggat from Bellevue HS,WA, ran a 2:29 in HS and was running sub-4:00 for Dellinger a few years later (and pushing Pre in a famous workout).
how about Curtis Beck from Santa Monica High, who ran a 4:04 mile as a junior, in '72? (not to mention a sub 8:50 2 mile); on dirt tracks.

reason for inquiring - is that a parcel that big would look mighty good to a developer. The Hx of the racing there rivals only a very few in the US - be sad to see it go the way of all the world.

It pisses me off everytime I see this. In the late 1990's, due to erosion, Mt. Sac shortened one of the turns on "the loop" (this is run twice within the first mile). Estimates are that the course is about 15 seconds faster than it used to be. If you are familar with the course, the 2 mile mark used to be at the top of poop-out hill. Now it is located behind it where Reservoir hill and poop-out come together and intersect with a main road. To respect some of these great past performances, Mt SAC should put an asterisk next to those times on the old course and make a note of it. Nelson's time would have been approx 14:17 on the "New course" It still would have been the fastest after 27 years!

1998 was the last year of the "old" mt. SAC course, I believe. There really should be two all-time lists, one for the old course and one for the new.

the land is city and county of san francisco watershed land.........and therefore protected from development........the college of san mateo is the premit holder for cross country events held there

The guys I knew at UCLA weren't esp. keen on him, but then I knew OR guys who soured on Dellinger too. The only coaches from that era I know of who seemed to never have a dissatisfied athlete were McClimon and Peter Tegen at Wisco. Not sure if this was a result of lots of incompetent coaching then or rampant independence among distance runners of that era. Probably both.
Who besides Nelson soured on Dellinger?
Dellinger drew a lot of the best high school athletes to Oregon, but most of them failed to improve after the age of 25. (Ken Martin is an exception that comes immediately to mind.)
I wonder why so many high school greats failed to reach their potential after leaving Oregon?
I ran competed in HS in the same era and against these guys (although behind'em). I wasn't one of the best but a fairly decent high school runner. We High School runners all ran more miles than HS'ers do now.

He may not have had the talent. Went from 4:14/9:05 (high mileage) in HS to 1:47/3:58/8:38 at Oregon; a respectable improvement to say the least. His brother Russ had the same PR's in HS but fizzled out at the UW.

definitely a career and PRs to be proud of. You may be right. He was good; more than good, but not GREAT....no slam on him.
I went to the trials in '72, to watch, while in high school. I remember him running around, having a blast; here, there and everywhere....lol....
Why does it seem that runners back in the day were happier and more fun to be around despite running more miles and training way harder than most runners do today. They had more fun racing and training than most on here seem to do when trying to have fun. Many runners today seem so uptight and bitter.
that's good to hear - hopefully the course will remain as 'the' course of the area - so comparisons can be made from generation to generation.
