we had a moron take over as our track coach my junior year, he made us peak at 20 miles per week for outdoor track in February, then spend most of the rest of the year doing crabwalks and pushups instead of actually running

he refused to let us run in meets if he saw us running outside of practice because he thought we 'weren't taking his training seriously'

Didn't start training seriously until my junior year of high school which accounts for the huge drop. Probably could have run much faster this past year but I only race the mile twice in track and one was doubling back and the other was at the end of the year when I was dealing with iron issues.

The trick is consistency. To shave off more seconds would be to sacrifice social choices and lifestyle changes. More sleep,stretching, rolling, massaging, etc. Maybe I'll get re-focused and PR into my 30's again. I have to be the one to make that choice and I've been in limbo the last few years. But I'll always try and get that daily run in. A little struggle everyday is better than taking time off and getting back into it. The hard way, again.

I feel you there man. I know its important to "buy into" a program and trust your coach. But not all coaches actually deserve that trust. For instance, my high school XC coach's training looked like this.

In season:

Mon: race pace intervals

Tue: tempo intervals

Wed: race

Thu: easy

Fri: easy, sometimes tempo intervals

Sat: race

Sun: long run

Hard to buy into feeling like absolute trash all season.

Wow that was almost identical to my high school schedule.
