My school won't even acknowledge some of my records. It's as if I didn't exist. I think there is some grudge with a key administrator.
After a long while, I learned to not care any more and moved on. I don't donate to the school or maintain any connection to it.
I did this to one of my athletes. She'd just nailed a great long jump and was well in the lead at our pit when another coach wandered over and mentioned to me that someone had gone 20cm further in the other pit. I talk to athlete, who has one jump left, which she gets super focussed for beating the new mark by a couple of cm's.
Turns out the other coach got his numbers mixed up, and she actually won the competition by almost half a meter.
When I came into my HS (sophomore), my brother had the 2-mile school record of 9:55. He set it his junior year off no off-season training, skipped his senior year to party and smoke drugs instead.
I worked my tail off year-round and by my junior year I had improved my 2- mile from 13:10 to 10:24, still 29 seconds off my brother's record. I ran 9:53 my senior year in a breakthrough effort. But by that time my best friend, who I essentially coached, had lowered it to 9:23.
Oh well. I did set the unofficial school record in the marathon of 2:49, improving it from 3:30 by another guy, but my record was lowered by a minute the next year by another friend. Needless to say, 40 years later, I am still the only one who is still running, much less the fact that I still compete (at the national level as a master). Unfinished business, I guess.

Not all schools invest in an official track records board. The little school I coached at had rows of event records printed from the copier and taped to the gym wall. When they repainted the gym,out went the records.
I could not convince the AD and administration to invest in a records board. So I kept them myself. I researched the history of our school track program and created an "All Time" list of the Top 10 performances in each event. Not everyone can set a record, but most talented and committed athletes can make the list.
Then I made our team shirts into walking billboards with the school records printed on the back. Another way of gigging the school board.
I no longer coach...actually, I coach the coaches...but we now have a record board on order.

Why on earth would you think that is "needless to say"? Absolutely nothing in your post building up to that suggested (much less outright stated) your conclusion.
The phrase "needless to say" isn't just some random phrase you throw in at the end of a thought. Nothing in your story has the reader thinking up to that point "oh boy, this guy must be the only one of the three still running because _______."
Presumably if you were shooting for high school record at one point your life, you must've graduated from high school. Did they not require English?
You can absolutely still run at a competitive university with a 4:25 high school PR. Obviously not a D1 top 15, but many schools outside of that will still allow athletes to walk on with that type of time.

OP, I'm not sure what the big deal is. Your son got a PR by a pretty big margin. That should be worth it. If he can improve a bit more, it might be ready to run at college (though not at a first rate program...or even second rate).

I was always happy when I set a PR but that happiness was always short lived because I would soon start dwelling on what I COULD have run if I had done this or that. I think this is normal. You shouldn't bee too upset that your son's happiness was short lived.
