Cortisone has to be use very sparingly or the risk of future tendon ruptures is increased significantly. I had chronic achilles/PF issues for about 3 years. Pain constantly. One cortisone shot and I thought I had been miraculously cured! Six week later I began to feel the same twinge as before and then it came roaring back. Doc wouldn't even consider giving me another shot. Sure hope this isn't the last hurrah for Rupp.

Rupp is going for broken. He knows the end is near. His PF is proof the miles over the years have caught up to him. He will be retired and Salazar's assistant coach within a year.
I had cortisone injections for PF for several years. Worked great, until it didn't work any longer. It's a tough deal.
Over my college xc and track years I probably had 10 to 15 cortisone shots!

Having all the recovery mechanisms at Nike HQ has nothing to do with tackling an injury in this case. The recovery utilities help his body recovery from hard efforts and his volume of training, not solve his plantar problems.
Nothing is going to beat out having a cortisone shot, but it's risky which is why it's usually a last resort. There's a reason why he got the shot just 2 weeks before the race and not back in early January before Houston. You don't want to get the shots unless you've explored all other options. Boston is a big race for Rupp (and he's getting paid a lot of money) and he's heading towards the roads chapter of his career. Getting the shots was probably a smart move.

The high-tech recovery methods could not overcome the lack of rest and recovery from all the 140 mile weeks of "marathon training," which is the cause of Galen's plantar fasciitis. Alberto is overtraining Galen just like he overtrained himself back in 1984. It did not work for Alberto in 1984.
Alberto has now gone to his usual method of pharmaceutical "help."
The corticosteroid injection does not treat the cause of Galen's plantar fasciitis, which is overtraining from his coach Alberto Salazar.
I treated many patients with success for plantar fasciitis with cortisone injections. I required a month with no running. Steroid injection in an elite athlete who continues training increase the risk of plantar fascia rupture.

Cortisone is nowhere near anabolic steroid, it's an anti-inflammatory steroid. I've been on large dose cortisone due to my auto-immune disorder and all I can say is that this drug is a nightmare. It causes sick side effects -- swelling, bone loss, moon face, insulin resistance and fat metabolism problems to name a few. Thats why it is called a devils drug. Maybe it can give some benefit as short term local injections to inflammation site but thats about it

Apparently recovery to you does not count all parts of the body.
If those things work, they would work for everything.
