Just came back from a first date and the girl asked me the dumbest running question

The really dumb part is you not understanding that and coming on LRC (because this is the font of all knowledge) to rip on the girl.

Obviously she's just making conversation abour your interests because thats what nice people normally do. Truthfully she probably doesn't even care and you just sound like a douche for making this thread. She deserves better, break it off before she gets too involved.

This is not directed at you, but it's amazing how many guys will read that story and think how dense that guy is but go and be so in their head that they consistently make the same mistakes and not be aware of it at all. Sadly, it wasn't until my mid-20's when I figured it out. All's well that ends well, however.

At least she didn't ask how much you bench. That would have been embarrassing.

I am sure there are plenty of things she knows about that you are a fool about. If you want someone who knows everything you know about, stick to self pleasure.

Maybe her dad has done 100-milers for most of her life, so that's kind of normal for her. So it would be a valid question. Are you a man like her dad, or just some punk runner kid?

It's a simple answer. Just tell her the farthest you've ever ran and phrase it as well the farthest I've ran is 18 miles. For me it is 18 miles, so your answer may be different.

Point is, learn how to answer questions. If you think it's a dumb question, rephrase the dumb question in your answer.

Just now checking letsrun today, and didn't think the original post was douchey. I just was a little surprised to hear the question, and have never had someone ask that before. The usual question from a non runner would probably be the "how fast is your mile?" Anyway, she is a pretty sweet girl, but has a very strong southern accent. I'd prefer sweet to being highly intelligent but not pleasant.

Aside from that, it was pretty pleasant and we're actually going out again Friday and meeting with her friends for a casual drink after. I'm just going to avoid the topic of competing coming up. Truly sweet girl, and works full time for her church. She arranges the logistics of all mission trips, and has been to some cool places herself with that.

No offense, but wrong.

A non-runner has little frame of reference for mile speed. She/he will have no idea if 6:28-min mile is significantly worse than a 4:09-mile.

The reference they DO have is distance. They walk every day. They drive every day. They know how far away something is. So they know the relative difference between someone who has run 18 miles, and someone who has run 72 miles.

Caveat - if the chick in question is asking your beer-mile time, then you have a keeper right there. She knows what's what.

Your original post is not douchey, but the fact that you called her question "dumb" reflects much more poorly on you than you seem to realize. It suggests that you are unable to stand outside of your own perspective and imagine what running seems like to a non-runner. Also, calling this young woman "dumb" is ironic because you are showing the very lack of insight that you are allegedly baffled by in her.

You go on in your later post to create a strange dichotomy between "girls" who are "sweet" and those who are "highly intelligent" but "unpleasant." Again, I strongly discourage anybody in college or older from seeking out "sweet and wholesome girls."

My honest opinion is that you are not ready to have a mature and healthy adult relationship, but I guess that's the purpose of dating.

You could also benefit from reading the book "Rabbit, Run" by John Updike. The main character, Rabbit, goes the traditional route and marries his pregnant and pretty, but dumb girlfriend, which ends up being terribly dissatisfying (in addition to the fact that married family life appears to be his only option).

I'm going to stop commenting here, though, because you seem to be oozing with benevolent sexism while lacking the intellectual equipment to recognize the logical and moral flaws in your line of reasoning.
