'Year-End Rankings' Correction - Kiprop #1, Centro #2**

In any year other than an Olympic year, Kiprop would be number one overall. In an Olympic year, he not only lost, he didn't even medal. The Olympic Champion is #1 in the Olympic year. EOS

Safe to say that Letsrun being an American website was a LARGE factor in these ratings.

Agreed if you ain't getting a medal at the Olympics, you are not getting number one ranking.

Here is how the 1500m number one ranked runners have finished in the Olympics:

2012: Kiprop - 12th. Gold Makhloufi

2008: Keitany - didn't make team. Gold Kiprop

2004: Lagat - 2nd. Gold El G

2000: El Guerrouj - 2nd. Gold Ngeny

1996: Morceli - 1st

1992: Morceli - 7th. Gold Cacho

1988: Cram - 4th. Gold P Rono

1984: Aouita - did not run the 1500 at the Games. Gold Coe

1980: Ovett - 3rd. Gold Coe

So Coe has won two Olympic 1500m Golds and even has held the 1500m world record and set the 1500m Olympic record and never ranked first in an Olympic year.

But people think Centro deserved the top ranking this year.

Considering centros obvious drug use he doesn't even deserve a nomination

She didn't just dominate DL, she destroyed all the Olympic medalists and took down a 28yo WR.

May be hard to find a better test case for this principal that "olympic gold trumps every other performance no matter what".

(That principle seems to me to really ruin the concept of rankings; why hve them, if you just automatically crown the olympic gold medalists regardless of anyone or anything else.)

Watched it again the other day and it was brilliant. He knew the field would let to go slow so he took the lead and just never let anyone passed him. He did the most jostling for positioning out of everyone in the race. He may not have run fast, but he did work hard and ran smart. And that's the key to being the best. Running the best race on the day for which everyone has prepared all year.
