Going to focus only on losing weight for the next few weeks, what's the best way to go about doing it?

Haven't done either, reading up on general dietetics and relation to sports nutrition seems to be a bit more informative.

Granted I only went from 205 to 185 (6'3") so nothing too extreme. I only really craved carbs, it wasn't so much a painful hunger. I imagine I could get to 175 with a bit more focused effort before it got overly strenuous. I can't imagine being any leaner then that would provide results worth the toll it took on my life.

per Night... the super light cheap stuff i get is 4% alcohol so just a few extra cals and i stay hydrated. Always feel fantastic in the mornings

I dropped a lot of weight this way:

Breakfast: 1 fried egg between two pieces of wheat toast + black grapes to ad morning digestion

Dinner: two servings of vegetable soup plus as many oyster crackers as I deemed fit until soup was gone

Drank lots and lots of water throughout the day. It helps you all around with curbing hunger and prepping your body to excrete wastes.

Get rid of soda and all the other unnecessary garbage you eat every week.

On saturday or sunday, *reward* yourself with a pizza or burger so long as you do your exercise first. But just one "cheat" meal. Then you get back to business and repeat.

I enjoy my breakfast and soups. I look forward to cheat day. I can also say no to many tempting foods now without blinking an eye or hearing my stomach grumble.

No lunch?

How would someone train on an egg sandwich and some soup a day?

Thats barely one meal

I'm surprised you're not dead. That is not enough food.

It comes out to about 1300-1500 calories per day. Doing just fine, thank you and a lot of people make comments in my weight loss. I feel good.

can you provide a breakdown? What you listed is 600-800 calories, max.

Yeah 1300 cals a day wouldnt cover what I burn running.

Did you run while eating so little?

I understand, you're trying to lose weight to "look good". Ever tried racing, or heck even a hard workout on a low carb diet? Underperforming city.

Three big things have worked for me, in the process of losing 1/3 of my bodyweight:

1. Between dinner (which often includes dessert) and breakfast, ingest nothing but water (and meds).

2. Write down everything (except water/meds) that you eat or drink during the course of the day.

3. The toughie: nothing but water when in front of a screen--TV, movie, or computer.

As the article makes clear, I can't suggest that the above will work for everybody. They work for me (took the weight off and have kept it off for some years); perhaps one or more of them could help someone else.

I am currently a dietetics student shadowing a sports dietitian at my college. A lot of athletes, especially runners and wrestlers, come to me to lose 15-20 pounds and keep it off. Those who follow what I say keep it off, but those who do not gain it all back.

The dietitian says to eat 8g carbs per kilogram of ideal body weight per day minimum. This aids in big training blocks and keeps glycogen topped up.

Eat some fats like nut butter or seeds, but do so in moderation (1-3 tablespoons) and with a large salad with vinegar dressing or no dressing.

Try to get carbs from whole sources like fruits (bananas, melons, dried fruits, etc.) and starches (potatoes, yams, rice, quinoa, beans, pastas), and to sweeten them up, use low sodium sauces or use veggies. A favorite is white jasmine rice with raw spinach and black beans.

Aim for about 1-1.3g protein per kg of ideal body weight as well.

We found that there must be a negative fat calorie balance in the body for weight loss, so keeping carbohydrates up while training to restore glycogen but keeping the fat lower so the fat can be burnt through exercise and not be restored through diet.

Well it obviously depends on your lifestyle such as, how many hours in front of the tv you a day, how overweight you already are, what kind of level of exercise do you output a day, how to maintain that output level without breaking, etc.

Overwhelmingly though it's eating in moderation that works. This different things work for different people talk is MAINLY just airy fairy code for people who want everything now, and they give up if they haven't seen progress in a week.

Agreed. The key isn't that you're drinking water after dinner or in front of screens, it is that you are foregoing the calories that you would be consuming had you not stuck with water. All of the water in the world, and all of the post dinner fasting in the world won't mean much if your dropping 1200 calorie meals at each sitting.

Honestly, it seems most of us are probably in agreement on the big picture issues and are just suggesting different little techniques as to how to achieve that big picture goal of running a caloric deficit without it being more uncomfortable than necessary.

No one has mentioned this, but it's important to avoid artificial sweeteners. If you want to sweeten a beverage, use pure stevia. Stevia in the Raw contains only stevia and a trace amount of dextrose, so it's okay.

Artificial sweeteners trick your body and will make you hungry. Stick with water, coffee, or tea.

I think it also helps to have a something for an after dinner snack if you're hungry at bedtime. Fat free cottage cheese works for me in the winter. In the summer, I'll make a huge whey protein smoothie with stevia as a sweetener.
