I doubt the vast majority of elite 5 or 10k runners can run a flat out 400m from a stationary start in under 49. Someone like Farah, whose best distance is probably 3000m, could probably run 49 flat, but then he's a sub 3:30 1500 guy.

Likewise, there will be very few elite milers (3:35 1500 men or faster) that could break 48.0 for 400m in a rested race, unless they are 800/1500 types like Makhloufi, Souleiman or Kiprop.

To run a 47 they would need to be elite 800 guys.

it is question of career peak shape upto end-'16

i have no doubt mo's career peak was '15 when his 3'28.9 wouda been 3'27-flat if he'd been drafted to bell by a 2nd set of pacers

in that form his 400 shape was likely 49-low/mid

this year he was past his peak from my observation, probably due to the hammering his body took in training & running in that epic cardiff 1/2M

IMO it killed of his speed for the year, but slowing down to 50-low/mid was still as quick or quicker than anyone in the 10k or 5k fields in the shape they turned up in & combined with his tactical experience he got the 2 golds

certainly, mo was no way as good in rio as he was in peking in terms of raw 400 speed

his 49-low/mid speed was at his career peak last year

centro probably has 47-flat/low speed but i haven't looked all that closely at his likely 400/800/1500 line-of-fit, but certainly well below 48

of course it woud be expected for a 47+ guy to beat a 50+ or even a 49+ guy in speed workouts especially if 47+ guy has the biggest gold of all

he was nowhere close to 5k WR shape, but close to 3k one & some way off his '04 shape where his 3'27.4 win in zurich was probably worth 3'26-mid in ideal race of even-pace/drafting/etc

Bernie had lost huge amount of speed from '01 or '04 peak, probably '01 was peak when he looked to have 3'25-high in 3'26-low pb in ideal race, considering 53+ finish, but hicham still quicker that day

Bernie had much quicker 400/800 speed than hicham in '01 but hicham got the 1500 superiority by bringing probably ~ 7'20 endurance to table

( his 7'23pb was rubbish circumstances

terrible pace & hicham was "shooing" on pacer after a few laps

pacer then sped off on a ridiculous next lap which left hicham in a vacuum

ideal run that day, paced evenly to 2k, he wouda gone ~ 7'20 )

Bernie never had better than ~ 7'28 - 7'30 endurance back then ( '99 - '01 )

( got crushed in his then 7'30+++pb in monaco where saidi-sief ran 7'25-flat off jog to 2k & still jog to bell but put in a ~ 54+ finish which destroyed Bernie into very high final finish position )

Bernie lost helluva lot of 400 speed from '01 - '06 with equally impressive loss of likely 800 speed as well :

well over 2s for 400, but that is process of ageing & elastic leaching away from legs

as for HT, it is only supposed to be 0.14s error v auto-timing in most cases at 400mor longer

any to any yahoo who thinks a distance runner with 49+ speed shoud run ideal 1'45.0 off 52.5 / 52.5, the logical question is, what do you expect them to run off :

- 52.0 opener ?

- 51.5 opener ??

( if you want a ballpark estimate, try formula to knock off any 800 clocking for "ideal" time

is there a "law of nature" stating that there is no theoretical time possible for an "anointed" "middle distance runner" to be able to run a 800 off 2s +ve splits like "elite" 800 guys are expected to do so in 1-off TT on circuit ???

Cram generally ran the 2nd lap quicker then the first lap.
