It's always a tough road for females who do well as teens and then struggle for a bit. But talent does not go away and I believe that Mary can come back if she still has the same motivation and desire. Instead of criticizing her, let's be positive and hope that it all works out for her.

This is a tremendous, possibly career saving decision.

Except the Ivy's don't give athletics scholarships.

What ever the 'backstory' is I doubt we'll hear the nuts and bolts of it anytime soon. I found her a refreshing addition to the US running scene and hope she continues to compete and enjoy the sport.

She won a World Junior Championship and was a finalist at another. She is a World Championship finalist along with numerous appearances at national and international invitationals and she is not 21 yet. She has had a enviable career so far. I wish her well.

Plus she'll get a fine education at Fordham.

I'm surprised this is big news. I thought it already happened like last year.

Same here. I thought someone bumped an old thread. She left Oregon about 18 months ago. Why is this news? Because she wears a different singlet now?

I'm not saying either of those. There is no reason to insult Renato. Runners spend about a decade training for their event. If Cram wanted to get Billy's 400m speed, then he would have to spend a decade to do it just like Billy did. That is possible but it is just not practical because often careers are only about a decade long. So practically he will "never" be able to get Billy's speed. Not because of physiology, but because of schedule and time.

Sure, there is no proven reason why Bolt and Kipchoge couldn't excel at each other's craft, but like the previous paragraph, they would be starting from scratch at the age of ~30. I wouldn't expect much out of them until they were pushing 40 years old. Bolt has already retired at ~30 so I doubt he would have any motivation to start training for something he is at level 0 in.

no one on the east coast is leading our national lists..too tough to train there to be ELITE

Fordam is a good school. She is back home and doing what worked for her before. Smart move on her part. Upward trajectory going forward.

I don't think it is nit-picking to say that she should get rid of the "high school student" banner on her webpage. Also, she has a schedule for 2015 indoor season up as the second to most recent thing in "latest news". Probably should update that site once every week or 2 weeks, or take it down.

I guess Sifan Hassan will take up her spot.

She's basically training under the guy that Alberto hired to supervise her workouts in HS. Seems like she's doing exactly what she did in HS. Except she's old and unfortunately slower.

The only thing that has changed is the singlet she's wearing. That's what I find facinating. I'd love to know the backstory there.

She says on her website that she's a "full time student at Fordham University," -- I think that's also a pretty big change from being a part time student at a community college to participate in the Oregon project.

Maybe it isn't a fresh slate, but it sounds like she's opening an extra door or two beyond track by staying out east.

Full time student is actually more compatible with a pro track schedule for than a college track schedule (especially if team travels too much).

Yes that she had left to return to the east but the thought was she was still tied in some ways to Salazar with henwood simply overseeing the workout given from Salazar like was done in the end of her hs days. Now it seems a total break from the group so more than just a change of uniform
