Far outweigh is a huge stretch my friend. Depends on the degree of each. Neither is good.
No, no, no. Obesity is far, far worse. Not even close. Heart disease, diabetes, breathing problems, anemia from poor diet, unpleasant body odor, unattractiveness, lack of self-respect, higher rates of cancer... it just keeps going. The worst part is that the obese can affect other people in public settings (taking two seats, higher health care costs shared by all, higher airline tickets because they require more fuel due to higher plane weight, etc.).
Skinny people are not a public burden.
You are looking at the overall impact on the economy and healthcare to make your decision. You need to focus on the actual pathological changes that occur in an obese person vs an anorexic. Obesity is obviously much more prevalent and wide spread. My argument is that there are just as many negative consequences from being anorexic like the poster is based on BMI. Specifically I mean BMI below 19, making a person anorexic. Here's just a few things of a laundry list that can go wrong:
decreased cardiac mass
reduced cardiac chamber volumes
mitral valve prolapse
bradycardia
hypotension
QT dispersion
gastroparesis
Depression
Anxiety
aplastic anemia (bone marrow production shuts down)
microcytic anemia (iron deficient)
macrocytic anemia (b12 and/or folate deficient)
Then the endocrine problems are many:
hypoglycemia
hypothyroidism
PCOS (female only)
anovulation (female only)
Osteoporosis (mainly female problem)
The point is, you get to a BMI low enough and your body just shuts down. The person in this post has a BMI of 17.4. That is WELL BELOW the 19 cutoff. Yes individual differences are out there, but I'd be concerned for my health big time.
So that is my point. There are just as many pathological problems to being anorexic than obese. Again, both are a problem. When you say "far outweigh" you were talking in terms of individual pathology. On the whole, yes way more people are obese and thus this has a much larger impact, but apples to apples, both have horrible negative consequences.
