Was it under 23 seconds?
Are you talking rolling start or stationary?
Cram was running low 23's in training in the summer of 85, "with a couple of yards rolling start". This makes me think he could have run 23.5-23.7 from blocks in a competition.
I don't believe that either EL G or Lagat had better 400 speed than Cram.
Neither broke 1:46 for 800, although obviously both had to be capable of faster.
I'd say Lagat and EL G would have trouble breaking 24.0 from blocks. but could probably do so with some specific training.
From a rolling start, then I'd say 23 low.
Cram was running repeats in the 23s. I suspect he could no doubt have hit the 22's out of the blocks if training for the shorter distance. I would wager that no athlete capable of running sub 1:43 hasn't been able to break 23 in the 200 or at least had the capability. My best was 22.6y with a 440y PR of 47.7. While's Cram's listed PR is slower, that's because he didn't train for the shorter races. He did run a 47+ relay leg while not in top shape. Cram was one of those "loose" runners who can kick faster than most athletes with better basic speed. I remember one study that noted certain athletes with looser muscles were able to get closer to their absolute sprint potential when kicking.
El G and Lagat would never have broken 3:30 without PED's, never mind their sub 1:47 finish in Athens. I hate it when people take obvious cheats and try to compare them to athletes who weren't on EPO - which didn't exist at the time. Put Coe or Cram or Ryun or Henry Rono on EPO and then we can compare them to some of the frauds of the past three decades, including Mo.
