The OP's point is interesting. A hat always makes me sweat more--always. I now use them in my marathon training, as a way to toughen myself (and duck some of the sun), unless it is really hot and humid. On a cloudy day, I would have gone hat-less in the race...unless it were raining hard.
Rupp should forget about all the tech gimmicks and just race. Whether it's the mask, or breathe rite strips, or the ridiculous aero strips he wore at the trials, and now the hats. It seems like he must need these things as mental crutches or something.
The white hat reflects a great deal of radiation, while acting as a slight insulator. Any physicists here want to comment?
Anyone who thinks Rupp made tactical mistakes that cost him a silver medal should demonstrate how it ought to be done by going out and winning the silver medal at the Olympic marathon in Tokyo.
Until then, I'll just congratulate him on his outstanding achievement and not worry about hats.

Sure thing dad. How he was performing is important. Salazar had him wear a special iced hat. There is a reason for that, and Salazar hasn't been forthcoming about the real reason so far.
Rupp was planning on running the Amsterdam Marathon in a few months. It seems to be that is a bad idea considering Rupp said his legs were shot which caused him to slow and make wide turns the last several miles.

Yes, he needs to figure out how many marathons he can run each year without wearing himself down too much. And you can call me dad, just don't expect me to cover your college tuition.
And by the way, I'm old enough to have seen more than one psychological ploy in competitive athletics. Did the ice hat help him, or did he only think it did, and if only the latter, was that enough of a plus to make it worthwhile?

Exactly. BTW, I was a great speller before keyboards and smart phones came along. But I'm going to buy an ice hat, and that should take care of any typing problems.

Rupp ran the second half in a splendid 64:10 on a hot day, after a 10k finals, and had bronze in the bag, of course he's going to slow down at the end.

Source? Last I heard he was going back to 10k on track and wasn't going to run another until after WC next year (I would guess NYC).
