English is not my first language. Maybe that's the reason some of the mistakes people make are hard to understand. For me "their", "there" and "they're" are as different as "dog", "fog" and "log" – yes, phonetically somewhat similar but not interchangeable.
And then there's the most common one: "your" and "you're". It seems that about 50% of the English speaking population is using them incorrectly. Especially when I see someone stating "YOUR AN IDOT" on a message board it totally makes my day.
Could someone educate me? Is it because:
a) They really don't know the difference
b) Is "your" an unofficially approved way to spell "you're" in informal writing
c) Has something dramatically changed in English grammar (or should I say grammer? :) since the days I learnt English at school?

a) Yes, probably ignorance or carelessness
b) No, with the exception of running (see what I did there?) jokes on LRC such as "Discus" instead of "Discuss" and phrases such as "YOUR (intentionally misspelled) an idiot".
c) The only thing that has changed is that, due to social media, we see a lot more of people's writing than we did 30 years ago, so it stands to reason that we see a lot more errors.
PS- You present yourself very clearly for an ESL. Kudos.

In response to the OP's question, yes, I would like a medal for knowing how to multiples. I can also divide.

POTO needs help wrote:I completely agree with this. Pointing Out the Obvious, you need help. For real. You are a very negative person who spends way too much time on here insulting high school kids. Please seek help before things get worse. This is not meant to be an insult. I really think you would benefit from seeing a professional to sort out your issues.
Thank you for your constructive criticism. I will certainly give it all the consideration that it is due.
This comment is not getting the recognition it clearly deserved.

Hey genius, I AM the grammar Nazi. My mom taught English for 25 years; recognizing grammatical errors in newspapers, on TV, etc. is a tragic curse. I don't LIKE the fact that newscasters' poor grammar keeps me from enjoying the programming. I was defending my fellow grammar Nazis, not railing against them.
You would have seen that if you were not so eager to be contrarian. I am going to point out the obvious: you are not nearly as smart as you think you are.
But, I forgive you.
You forgot menus.
I'm always the last to order, because I have to proofread the menu before I read the menu.
And there is always at least two errors.

Coffee: lol, yes
Nutjob: lol, saw the same thing :-)
I bet Pointing Out the Obvious is one ugly MF. So bitter.
Knowing grammar may not make you smart, but not knowing it definitely makes you look like a complete moron...no matter how smart you might really be.
D- for rhetoric and argumentation. She's living proof that someone can apparently have good grammar and be not very bright at the same time.

Damn it!
This site needs an edit function.
Some of the problems are not grammar but usage. Nine out of ten times, I see people accuse someone of being "bias" or even saying "I am bias" rather than "biased." It's like they think "bias" is an adjective. How did this come to pass?
For all intensive purposes I agree hole heartedly.
There are worse things than not understanding grammar. . .
Did you know that many people believe a flying zombie killed by Italians is God's kid?

My head literally exploded when I read this.
While were at it being able to do math doesn't make you smart either. Alot of people can't do math and are smart to.
yeah, get off me(e)!

Don't you mean literary head exploded?

The LRC message boards represent a casual environment. If I was at a bar watching a game with friends, I wouldn't bother to correct their word pronunciation. Using the same rules-of-engagement, I wouldn't correct a person's post on these message boards.

Agreed!
At work, I am the person that everyone else consults to review their important e-mail messages prior to sending them elsewhere, so I completely understand the desire to help. However, an effective communicator always remembers his target audience. The LetsRun message boards are not the place to feed your OCD regarding spelling and grammar corrections.
