This was clearly visible during the race on NBC's broadcast. Kipchoge turned his head around, reached his arm back to full extension, and patted his hand downward a few times. He was looking right at the guys, and almost seemed to be smiling. At the time I thought he was telling them not to clip him, or possibly to slow down. Turns out, he was telling them to calm down.

He knew they were all keying off of him. Legendary.

This brings to mind Rudisha, in the call room before 2012, saying 'if you want to die, follow me.' (or something along those lines).

That is the ultimate MF line.

I agree with others here -- Kipchoge was in complete control the whole way. Look at that big crowd that was still in front closing in on 18 miles. Then, a series of 4:35 miles and the crowd is gone. Finally, with only Lilesa left, Kipchoge appears to get annoyed with Lilesa's drafting and starts zig zagging like a road cyclist in a 2-man breakaway in the final kms. It was clear right there that Lilesa was racing for second.

Am I the only person who didn't realize Eliud Kipchoge is the same Eliud Kipchoge.

Bekele finished 3rd in the 2016 London marathon versus arguably the best field ever assembled. They ran world record pace in the first half and he did not melt down despite the fact that he had such a short preparation phase. He also had one of the fastest debut marathons. He also came off of a two year injury and defeated Mo Farah in the half marathon. Do you seriously want to call into question his ability to make the race interesting? Even Geb said it is a shame he was not selected. It would have been unquestionably more interesting had he been there.

Absolutely right, the pace here definitely wouldn't have burned him either and he's a great championship runner would have been interesting to see what he had.

Just looked it up and it seems to be from this road race:

Traditionally, when you say "5km" you mean a road 5K, and when you say "5000m" you mean a track 5K, so I guess the same applies here.
