In the OP, you said he wouldn't medal in the 10k even if he dropped the marathon.
You also implied that anything you do is a waste of time if you aren't going to win an Olympic medal, which is not only false, but an incredibly and sadly narrow view of the world.

He believes that he has a non-trivial chance to medal in both events. Based on his accomplishments in the 10k and the nature of championship marathons, this is a reasonable belief. It is hard to say which event he has a better chance in. There is a full week between events, and he feels that he can adequately recover in order to be at his best for both races. Therefore he will run both.

The marathon will undoubtedly bring out the Respro mask, the only Rupp certified mask. The pollution is incredibly high in Rio and Rupp will be donning his trademark face wrap. When he wears it, we've come to loving call him Rabid Rupp.
If you haven't already seen them, there was a huge ad buy from an American company selling these as a build up to the Olympics. Respro is a UK outfit, but many American companies are now manufacturing and selling stateside (and in Rio).

I will be shocked if Rupp is not top-5. He has a great chance to medal. I have always been ambivalent about Rupp, but after seeing how smooth he looked in his debut there is no doubt the marathon will prove to be his best event (if not in Rio, in the next 18 months). If he remains healthy he will get down to 2:05 in the near future.
He won't need to run a top 25 time in the world to win a medal, potentially even gold. Th Olympic marathons are always slow, and this is going to be a hot one, which Rupp will be prepared for. If Rupp runs 2:10, he'll medal for sure. If Rupp runs 2:09, he'll win.

I like this response. There's also the unknown of both of them -- you never _really_ know what race shape you're in until you race. His marathon-10K training regimen might leave him really strong for the 10K, for instance, and he might knock it out of the park. There's uncertainty in the race -- who will fall? who will be out of place when the big break happens? where will Rupp be? will there be a surge-slow-surge yoyo like in 2012 that benefits the steady-wins-the-race strategy of Mo and Rupp?
But the unknown-unknown aspect of the marathon is really interesting. We know he's better at longer distances than 5K anyway. Maybe he's better at the marathon than the 10K. Maybe the marathon is really his sweet spot and he just hasn't raced it to find out.
