Your idea has merit.
If a person runs with the best runners all season, theoretically he should get closer and closer to their ability by the end of the season. I coached runners who experimented with this and a few did see some improvement.
At the high school level it is easy to get them to "go out hard." The hard thing is to get them to run even pace. I have never found that a kid ran worse that way. Front running is foolish, especially at the high school level.
Everyone wants to do things their way, I usually let them experiment with racing strategies, but advised them on running even pace. The 800 may be a bit different, but then again maybe we need a few more Dave Wottles' as in the 1972 Olympics.
Wottle ran 26, 26, 26, 26 but he did this because he was injured, it was totally an accident.
Sometimes that is what it takes to get people to believe that running even pace works. They have to get injured to find out that it works.
