fwiw I really do hope Rupp does a 5/10 double if he qualifies. I know I'm in the minority on this board. But one thing that seems set in stone and beyond dispute is that Rupp is focused on winning a medal in the 10K. I hear the commentators say that he is doing "marathon training". But I believe they are wrong. He is doing 10K training. They cite his large volume of 140+ miles/week. But 30 of those miles is in water. It amounts to the same volume of miles he was doing leading up to the 2012 olympics. They cite the long runs he is doing (up to 23 miles) but that is not much different than the 10k training he has done in the past. Moreoever, he is clearly doing speed training and will do more of it after the OT.
Knowing that he is focused on the 10K, doing the 10K/marathon double strikes me as dumb. If Rupp invests so much training on speed work to compete in the 10K why waste that running the marathon? I don't even care if he has little chance to medal in the 5K.
Moreover, he has the better part of the next 10 years to be great at the marathon. On the other hand this is his last chance to compete on the track in the Olympics. He should make the most of it while he can.
Spot on.
