For the tax experts - if the prize is less than $600 does it still need to be reported as income. If the plan is $10 per day rent from each renter then there is at least $14400 in rental income plus 15% of all prizes and any reimbursements for travel from the sponsors - wonder if the agent reports all the income? Might be a reason for an audit of the group.
Very true on this. I am sure they make close too 150,000 all togther for the year if not more. I would be curious to see how or if she paid any taxes on the money won.

How much do the Kenyan tax authorities take from these runners? Is it the same percentage that is taken from world elite athletes?

One race in particular had top 5 money and US Citizen money. The Africans that listed citizenship as US but had no proof were denied that additional money. So I made out with $500 that day. I got a call from one of my African competitors (I'm close friends with people he trains with) asking if I received the money. That's a situation I can support. Offer money for both.
The big thing you guys need to realize is these African runners in a lot of causes are doing this for their families over seas. $500 dollar paydays help them support their families medical bills. food and housing for almost half a year.

We did have to complete W9s. What sort of visa status do these runners have so that they can be paid? The race is paying the athlete and not the agent, correct?

I can't speak for Glass City, but the marathon I work for occasionally has an international runner win prize money. Our 1st-3rd place prize money is > $600, 4th-6th is less. We get a completed W9 for anyone who wins any prize money. For athletes represented by an agent we will mail a check to the agent's address but the payee is the athlete. We have had requests to make the check payable to the agent, but we do not do that as our feeling is the athlete earned the money. For athletes who do not have USATF numbers we have to factor in some withholding for state and federal taxes. It's been a few years since we had any international runners win prize money so I'm a little fuzzy on the details.

Just wanted to harmonize with your concern about xenophobia. I am happy to lose to clean foreign runners. My view is that we have a truly *international* sport and I am happy to have some wealth distributed to the families of these runners. No doubt others will disagree with me, but just wanted to put my opinion out there.
I had an argument with one guy about this issue. He was a free trade lobbyist. I pointed out that based on his idea of free trade, there should be no reason to block Kenyan runners from earning money in US races. He said "that's different George!" Of course, what is different is the notion of for whom the trade should be free. Free to one side of the deal; something less than free to the folks born outside the USA.

Truthfully, I don't have a clue. I know one guy in particular was supporting his mother back in Kenya who was battling cancer. He's a standup guy and actually runs/works for the local shoe store in the area. Pretty sure most of his money was being sent back. These guys aren't blowing most of their money on mall cloths and drugs. haha

I get what you're saying. I'm all for fair competition and am not afraid to lose to a hard working African, Asian, European, etc. What I don't like is cheating. I'm a real american, hard working, beering drinking, young man. I want to win fair and square. I expect the same from my competitors.
The problem, IMO, is the agent who is sponsoring, housing, and registering the runners. My guess is most of the runners do not know what they are getting into except the opportunity to win relative fortunes outweighs the risk.
If you lock up the agent, the average foreign runner would not have the resources to travel, live, and register on their own, She rotates an endless supply of runners in her "business" model. If one gets busted send them back and bring in fresh meat.

Seriously?! The elite standards are not elite for glass city. The standards, which are on their website, are faster than the majority of people, but I would call them regionally competive.
And as far as the elite that was there claiming wind, dude I was there. The weather was perfect. Do you run much outside?
