I wondered this in 2004 when Trent Briney was 4th at Marathon Trials behind Dan Browne.
Browne double marathon, 10k in Athens. Briney would have been Hanson's first Olympian. If i recall correctly Browne ran OK in the marathon, but got murdered in the 10K.

It wouldn't matter because he didn't have the standard. Meb gave up his 10K spot to run only the marathon, and it was given to Dathan Ritzenhein, who finished DNF or DFL at the trials but was the only other guy with the A standard.
Bob Kennedy also had the 10k standard in 2004.
Kennedy DNF while Ritz finished DFL in around 32 min to get the last spot.
You're right, guess it pays to finish the race. So I guess hypothetically Bob Kennedy could have taken Dan Browne's spot.

I thought of this one immediately when seeing this thread as I was there for it. But it was Flawduh training buddies helping each other and I'm sure no money changed hands cuz' none of them had any back then. Year before in nationals 10k Shorter and Bachelor held hands at finish to the consternation of finish line judges.
Dan Browne would have been a good example and you have your facts twisted.
Dan ran well in the 10k with no intention of running the marathon other than Alberto wanted him to double. He ran 2:27:17 for 65th in the marathon.
Hanson runners were 4th and 5th in the trials (Briney and Verran). Had Browne stepped aside the Hansons would of been represented in 4 straight Olympic Marathons.

Yes. Kennedy would have had the spot.
I always wondered what it would have looked like if Kennedy stayed in the race while hurting.
Two guys hobbling with the one who finishes second to last getting the final spot.
