Rupp solo 1:01:20 half marathon today in Portland

Galen's tempo workout this morning unfairly bumped subelites out of medal contention in this half marathon. The fourth place finisher should be justifiably upset -- he trained hard for this race and got bumped from the podium.

So his Marathon Pace is faster than the current world record (2:02:40 pace)? He needs to ditch the track immediately if that is true.

Sometimes it is certified and they set it up wrong. Put the turn-around pylon at closer spot.

Anyone have a GPS track of the course? Strava? Unless they verify the turnaround spot day of race, how would they know?

Trust, but verify. I seriously doubt they'd do this for such an important race with the scrutiny today. So this sounds legit. Great job!

Debating at work about this. If Galen Rupp ran the Olympic Marathon Trials, and ran all out from the gun, could he win by 2 minutes?

Pints to Pasta is a prime example of this. Definitely short.

The original "CrawFish Crawl" was also short until they got called on it...

Give me a break. Portland courses arent short. The reason Pints to Pasta was so fast was because it was downhill, very downhill. And this year they changed the course, so its no longer downhill or fast.

Yes.

Ritz is banged up -- love the guy, but we've been down this road before. Meb couldn't hang with a bunch of 1:04 half guys this morning. And none of the 2:11 guys seem to want to step up and take that third spot. So you've got Puskedra, Ward and a couple of others who will probably run 2:11 flat, maybe 2:10 high. But if it's tactical early, then you could easily see 2:11 high or 2:12 qualifying.

So then the question is: Could Rupp run 2:09:xx solo? And that seems pretty clear.

Agree. I've run in certified courses where the turnaround volunteers are set up in the wrong place...short or long. It's frustrating.

The course Galen ran today has been USATF *certified* since 2013. It was not certified last week! See:

(Note this race was run on a certified course prior to 2013 but it was a slightly different course, so different certificate.)

The race wasn't USATF *sanctioned* until last week. Sanctioning just means the race agrees to follow USATF rules and not do something weird, like award the last place finisher first place. To receive sanctioning you fill out a form and pay your USATF association.

USATF Sanctioning and USATF Certification are completely separate processes. Sanctioning is done to a race; certification is done to a course. The Olympic Trials are a USATF event, so they want the qualifier USATF sanctioned. For the rest of the world, we want Galen to have run a true half marathon, so we want the course USATF certified.

A race can have a USATF certified course and not be sanctioned as well as a race can be USATF sanctioned and not have a USATF certified course.

Why is this so hard to understand?

Not sure if it was a workout, but after his race he ran back up the course opposite the direction people were finishing. He ran past me when I was at mile 10 or 11 after he finished and still looked like he was doing sub 5s.
