He posted a direct quote from Tinman saying that calling him a Lydiard copy-cat was a "compliment" to Lydiard.

That is freaking insane. That guy tore him apart for making it out to be that Lydiard (R.I.P.) should feel honored to be compared to Tinman.

Well there's a chap by that name from Eugene who in June finished a marathon race. The bad news, sort of, is that is took him 4 hrs 21 min. The good news, sort of, is that he managed to average right around 10 min per mile pace whilst walking.

On the run-insight thread Tinman mentioned that his wife coached cross country this past autumn and said her team was second in states in her first year at the helm. I will leave all of you to your own digging as am starting to feel dirty...have fun at dyestat.

I split a 49 in HS way back in 1997 but never broke 50 out of the blocks. These days it is probably more in the 53-55 range. Maybe slower. I'm 25 now and play a lot of soccer. Regardless, I was trying to say that it was a nerdy pissing contest and sooner or later those things devolve into comparing PRs. If only life were so simple.

Probably because nobody has ever heard of Tom Schwartz. He wouldn't get the same kind of attention if people knew he was some average dude with minimal experience in the sport. He's built a big cultish following by posting general training advice and keeping his name secret. It just won't work as well for him with his name, and thus his credentials, out there for all to research and put to the test.

This is not cruel. He deserves every bit of the crap he(Tinman) gets from us. This guy named Tom from Oregon comes on a message board and talks trash about a great coach like John Kellog. I would like to hear from WeJo or RoJo on the matter.

Are you trying to defend Tinman? If so why are yout rying to defend a man that is too scared to post his own name. Wait I am too scared to post my own name for fear it might get out that I am a high school kid that can barely break 4:30. Wait I don't care. I just think that if someone is going to slander someone then let that someone know about it.

Here are some observations from someone working in the professional field of coaching. I am a college coach with a MA in English and 30 credits in exercise science. I work in the real world of educating young men and women. I have been lucky to coach some elites and I know the Johnson’s. I have never met or spoke to Mr. Kellogg. I say all this to drop clues as to who I am for those who care and to set the stage for what I am about to say.

Tinman or who ever he is, is well read in exercise science and writes good articles. He is popular on this board because he seems to know a great deal compared to the average poster. It's kind of like George Mally posting about his training and all the high school and college wanna bees oooing and ahhing.

My feeling has always been that MR. Kellogg’s approach to coaching as a business and his self promotion – or rather Weldon’s promotion of him, has been a bit oily and I would say along the line of cereal box religion (philosophy). However, I recognize this, as a “gut” reaction, because of my own particular sense of how a coach should behave which I must confess is a rather vague notion at best.

Tinman’s writings are from fairly accessible sources for anyone wishing to do the research – certainly they are nothing new to the professional coach. Indeed, they are at best B quality college research papers.

Mr. Kellogg’s writings about coaching and his claims of notoriety (high school champions and the Weldon’s) are fairy ordinary at best. I don’t think his understanding of exercise science is any more or less insightful then Tinman’s or anyone else who studies the sport.

In the end, neither one is truly a “giant” in the field of distance running nor will they ever be such.

One is an average coach with a quirky, albeit, harmless need for self- promotion and the other is a well meaning, if not thin skinned, would be writer-coach.

Many, many, of you would be much better off going to original sources at the local college library.

The whole thing amounts to wresting over a dog pile at best.

This thread isn't speaking to the merits of Tinman's statements, rather it's morphed into an invective, sophomoric assault on him and even his wife. This is unearting personal territory that is far worse than what he is accused of saying. You kids should learn how to argue like a GROWN MAN.

I'm pretty conflicted about this topic. When tinman started giving advice on letsrun.com years ago, I was horrified by some of his recommendations, and was troubled by the air of authority with which he spoke, since it appeared to me that he really didn't know much about training. At this point, I think that he's a nice guy (usually) who has read a lot about training and provides some useful advice to people. Until he has some real experience in developing good runners, however, it does seem as though he should be a little more cautious about his pronouncements. Perhaps more importantly, people who look for advice on the Internet (or anywhere else) should be cautious about blindly following the recommendations of anonymous (or pseudonymous) posters without a proven track record.
