What kind of speed do ncaa 5000m runners have?

These guys are fast. That's why they're racing for international medals. Sub 50 isn't some magical barrier that only sprinters can run. How many more distance champs could the U.S. produce if runners with that kind of speed start working on longer stuff???

Steve Ovett's 400m best was 47.5.

Run when he was 18. Not quite a year later, he ran 21.7 for 200m.

He did later run 46.8 in a 4 x 400, though.

If you look at 14 flat guys, a lot of them can drop 51.x with a moving start (which makes a big difference for non-sprinters). Some can hit 50.x and 1:50.x, these would be the miler types. I would guess most are more like 52-53 and 1:54. The slower end would probably be 54-55 with a moving start and 1:58-59. Outliers with 56-7 and 2:00-2:01 probably exist.

I have had college teammates who were 14:10 to 14:15 and couldn't break 4:10. 1:54 and :51? Are you out of your mind.

I was one of the "standard 5000m" guys referenced earlier on the thread: 14:33, 4:11 mile, 1:55, 53ish. 51 is quick.

there's an irish junior athlete that has pbs of 1.58, 4.04mile (3.46 1500m) and 14.02 (NJR). His 800m pb is a few years old but it gives you a general indicator of what elite (junior) 5000m runners can do speed wise.

there's also another irish junior, freshman at FSU actually, who has ran 1.53 (in a 800m time trial solo - although this is purely anecdotal) 3.47 1500m and a 14.23 5000m.
