I remember my dad showing me a article in Runner's World in the mid 70's. I believe it was on Bill when he was still in high school. Could you please tell if that is correct. If so. What year and month was it printed?

McChesneys were years younger than Virgin... and slower.

Billy was faster at mile, 3000 and 5000m.

Billy's best was a third place finish in the NCAAs and a 4th place finish at the TAC. That's it. AWOL at cross. Why? Did he have a lot of injuries?

Virgin & McChesney WERE of the same era---both made the 80 Olympic team Virgin the 10,000 McChesney the 5,000 & in '83 for the first World Championships in Helsinki Virgin

did not get the A standard. TAC moved Bill to the 10k,

where he made the final. True they were not in college or high school at the same time.

Been there and hmmmmm's comments seem very close to something Craig would write himself. If this is you Craig, how are you doing? Are you still in or running for public office? If you are not Craig, did you know Bill? Using the name "Been there" could only indicate a few things. 1. You are Craig and that would not be surprising. 2. You have been on top of the US and world stage as an elite runner yourself. 3. You have coached either Bill or Craig (actually Harry Johnson coached both at one point in his career). I am pretty sure that you did not coach Bill. 4. You are an armchair quaterback that has no real understanding of what it took to get to either athlete's level (plenty of those around and they are all pretty easy to ignore).

P.S. I will grant you that I was certainly slower than Craig and I am fine with that.

Billy seemed to get injured during NCAA season and run great in Europe.

Billy had one of the great all-time quotes after he ran fairly slow at the NCAA 5K his senior year, still make All-American:

"I can't believe this is the same body that ran 13:14."

I saw Rono run 14:30 two months before running 13:06 ... many people, even experienced runners, don't understand the up and down cycles of running. Billy was a great, great runner.

Kenny is writing a book that should be out in the spring last time I heard. I think it is titled something like 'Bill Bowerman and the Men of Oregon' something to that affect..Randy Newman who post here knows alot about this project
