We so don't deserve to have an athlete like Rupp represent us. We are the worst fan base I've ever seen of any sport. But if Rupp runs the marathon and is gracious enough to do it representing the USA, I'm going to cheer like I've never cheered before!!!!

Has anyone noticed his latest headshot on his IAAF page? Not sure how long that has been up, but he looks like a total tool in that picture, sorry ...

To me it comes of as a calculated PR thing ... in the past many fans snickered about his goofy look and smile in pictures, so some Nike PR guy probably told him to try and look cool or hard (or something) for that picture ... and it comes off as bad.

The very close association with the "Evil Empire" Nike plays into to, I'm sure.

I do think partly it has to do with his look and his attitude (or perceived attitude anyway ... I don't follow him enough to know much about him) and the perception of him as coddled and over-entitled (Salazar as his own personal coach since HS, sleeping in an altitude tent in HS even, etc).

Doubtless he came off as suspicious to many after 2010/2011 or so, with his sudden new found speed and kick (around the same time Mo Farah went from B-level to world beater) and now with the SI/Propublica allegations, of course all that will only got stronger.

The Rupp-haters on here are ridiculous (and it's largely a trolling and inside joke thing, I think) I agree, but the fanboys are just as bad. Personally I view him with suspicion and I'm not a fan, but it's silly to see any and everything positive said about him shot down by some.

It's also silly to say "we don't deserve an athlete like Rupp". It's no different from any other sport ... you have fans being very harsh and overly critical of the big stars all the time (then also an element of mindless worshipers who seem them at demi-gods).

Rupp will make a good living as a 2:07-2:08 marathoner racing New York every fall. Like Ritz, except without the cross country toughguy appeal. One year he might get top-three in a thin Boston field the way they set it up for Americans to place. Better than another four years of 5th-place WC/OG finishes.

I actually agree 80% with you (I entertain that he could be faster than 2:07, but he will certainly never win a major marathon), except about the 10k comment, because it was simply false. :)

However, an argument can be made against us for the half as well because Mo has run several of them and Galen has run, what, one? In 60:30? In 2011? (I seriously did some quick searches and couldn't find any other HM results for him, is that his only one?)

That's a significant factor, even if you refuse to believe Galen can run 59:23 right now or ever, as Mo just did. I think creating a HOPE that Galen can find a distance where he can beat Mo (the marathon, NOT the half) is a way for some to be excited about his progression. I would consider myself a Galen fan, but quite frankly he doesn't have to win anything or beat anyone specific for me to be happy for him. And I view Farah as a freak with unbelievable range, so who knows if the two will ever move up to the marathon together, and who knows what will happen if they do.

I've never gotten this argument. Google Galen Rupp height/weight and he's listed as 5'11" and 134lbs. Google Wilson Kipsang and he's listed as 6'0" and 137lbs.

You are right that Rupp's 60:30 is probably far from his ceiling. I'd definitely give him sub-60, although not by too much at this point. Maybe 59:40 as an absolute best case.

How that translates to the marathon is hard to say. He is coming very late to the event by international standards, so he doesn't have that long to figure it out and put down his best races (unless he's going to have Meb-like longevity). Then again, he has that 15 years of high mileage under his feet and his aerobic development is huge.

Yet I just don't see him as being a runner who translates 10k/HM ability to a marathon exceeding those expectations. Lack of grind, maybe?

If true, it seems like Olympics 10K and then NYC Marathon would maximize his income for the year.

No one has been able to prove Rupp made a statement that he completed any further coursework after the 2008-2009 school year. The claim by fans has been graduation in 2009 which is impossible unless the coursework is completed by the end the 2008-2009 year. Meaning that completing 25 credits by December 2009 means he would be a 2010 graduate.

So, assume Rupp did not graduate unless you can prove it happened after the 2009 school year.

Also, as someone else noted, Rupp is not the first, by far, student-athlete to not quite complete a college degree. Close, but not good enough to earn a degree.

Rupp gets hate mostly because his fans insist on things like, he graduated. Even when Rupp makes a statement he did not his fans insist he must have eventually graduated. Also, when Rupp loses to a U.S. runner it is because Rupp was tired, jet-lagged, had an off day, etc. It is never, Rupp lost to a better runner; that is impossible according to Rupp's fans.

GRupp gets a lot of anonymous hate from (sub-)?elites who believe that they would have been as good as Rupp if only they had had his opportunities.
