Defenses of East German dopers are based solely on what aboutisms. Strike from the records every proven doper's records, honors, and performances, before or after. Their records were not all destroyed. The authorities tried to destroy all the records. I've been to the Stasi museum where they preserved fragments of their documents that had been shredded and dipped in some chemical that made them into something like cement pieces--far beyond the possibility of reconstruction. They documented everything, as nearly all dopers do--receipts, schedules, communication, experimental results--because that is the only way to make it work on a national or even individual level.
