Williams is your place. Fantastic academics and a huge team. The coach there lets anyone walk on and is equally invested in developing 30 minute 8k guys as he is in 30 minute 10k guys. His focus is on loving the sport. Williamstown has tons of beautiful trails to run around when it's not freezing cold. The team culture is very welcoming to all abilities an has people who have never run before joining every year.
A ton of other NESCAC schools have the same deal, I'm just a williams alum. Amherst and middlebury cut, but Tufts, bates, bowdoin, conn college, haverford, and Carlton all have big teams and similar programs. Also look at caltech and emory.
Unless 1400+ means 1500+, then Williams is probably out of reach for a non-legacy, non-minority, non-recruited athlete.
But in general, I agree. There are a lot of great DIII programs that don't cut. Haverford has long had a really inclusive culture on their teams. It's the kind of place where school record holders cheer their heads off for the slowest people on the team. Carleton and Amherst have great cultures (and great coaches) as well.
But no matter where you are, there's nothing wrong with being the slowest guy on the team. It mostly depends on your own attitude. Some guys might find it wears on them after a while. Others are happy to just roll with it.
