The best part of race walking is when they finish and just keep walking.

You don't need to beat anyone at race walking to then ridicule the sport. You can compete at nationals, come last by two or three days, and be top seven in the US.

It appears there are no qualifying standards. First and last (7th) place are separated by almost three hours.

Watching the 50km right now. These guys are moving at around 4.20 per km pace (sub 7 mins mile pace). Super impressive.

Take a look at Tallent (Aus) and Barrondo - impressive stylists.

The current leader (2hrs13+ in race) is Toth (Slovakia) - very pure, aesthetically pleasing style. Heffernan (Ire) and Tallent (Aus) have similar, staccato rapid striding styles.

Walking gets a bad rap, but unjustifiably so - because it is a pure, natural, awe inspiring sport. Hopefully more youngsters will be inspired to race walk watching these superb modern day gladiators in action.

Barrondo dqd at 2:24 mins for lifting! Tears for Guatemala and Central America. An injustice for Barrondo who trains in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala at 2300m altitude.

This is the drama in race walking - no guarantees that the judges will do their jobs properly. A certain amount of subjectivity because hard to judge with 100 percent accuracy. There have been egrigious mistakes made - and sometimesdebatable omissions of dqs.

Ovett said at the gun "you can go out, get the shopping done, come back, watch Gone With the Wind, and they'd still be out on the course." I took his advice. I suggest you do the same.

That's a bit of a dig at those modern day gladiators, but in defence Ovett provides very interesting commentary with fascinating tid bits.

Ovett mentioned how he used to spot Tallent training around the local park in Melbourne and going for hours and hours. Ovett moved to OZ years ago and may have become a citizen . Ovett's son was a great runner but has now switched to cycling.

By the way- if you want to retire in Thailand you need either 800,000 baht in the bank ($23,000) or a monthly income of 60,000 baht ($1700).

In North East Thailand - you can live very well with about $1000 dollars a month.

Back to the walk - Toth all the way, with Tallent some way behind in second.

Toth will put Slovakia on the map. Great beer and sausages in Slovakia and the ladies are fine too. Sorry for digression.

How could they compete so long against athletic epics like synchronized swimming, rhythmic gymnastics and figure skating?

The olympics has always promoted ridiculous sports. They even polluted athletics wth silly contests like triple jump.

Barrondo's dq was a mistake as his style was no different to others who were not dqd for "lifting" and "bent knees"

In swimming the different strokes are very distinct. No need for technology to tell if you are cheating.

The fact that they need judges or technology in walking is ridiculous to me. If they go too fast they are cheating.

I'm more interested in your life of travels than the race walk. Tell us more about Thailand and Saudi?
