I challenge Froning. Let's put up some money and see. I bet I can beat him right now in a footrace over any distance, in skiing downhill or xc, in tennis, in a bike race, in a real pull up contest, in a rope climb. I could train for twenty years and not win an Olympic decathlon event except the 1500, but I can beat Froning.
Why on earth would you just pull this single line? Literally my entire post was about how Froning would not be competitive in a high-level decathlon. But I'll say this--I don't disagree with you. You'd probably beat Froning in Skiing, XC, tennis, a bike race, a footrace, and any number of other athletic disciplines.
You could also probably beat Lebron James, Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Keninesa Bekele, and any number of other elite athletes in random disciplines not remotely associated with the very specific physical traits that make them good at what they focus on. They're still phenomenally athletic individuals, and you'd be a fool to think otherwise.
You'd probably be competitive against Bekele in the high jump, but he'd lap you half a dozen times in a 10k. You might be able to compete against Usain Bolt in a pull-up contest, but he'd trash you in any distance from 400 down (probably 800 down tbh). You might be able to match Phelps in a rope climb, or Lebron in a tennis match, but in a pool or on a basketball court, each of them would shitstomp you so hard it would be painful to watch.
tl;dr no, Froning most likely wouldn't be any good at the decathlon. He doesn't have the physical qualities that make one good at it. But there are many, many different measures of athleticism, and Froning is certainly at the top in terms of the athletic qualities that make one good at Crossfit.
I'm a mid-d runner. I'll probably never run under 11 in a block start 100, and I'll probably never crack 15 in the 5k. Am I inherently more or less athletic than someone who's running 14:30 in the 5k but can't break 56 in the quarter? Or someone who can run 10.5 in the 100 but can't break 4:45 in the mile? No, I wouldn't think so--this is simply testing different types of athletic abilities, and it's worth recognizing that, while all the "fittest man in the world" garbage in regards to cross fit is, well, garbage, guys like Froning (and in the Decathlon, Eaton, Hardee, or Clay) have the almost freakish blend of athletic talent needed to succeed in that specific discipline.
