Sure they are. Have you never seen 'Fargo'?
I've seen the real Fargo and it sucks. Moorhead too.

Las Vegas. Famous for gambling, partying, the strip, drugs, having fun. Has the image of a cool city. Also you'll get everyone asking you "Have you been to the Pawn Stars pawn shop??????"

Boulder? Boulder sucks ... I live 45 minutes away and work 15 minutes away. I rarely go there because of the suckage.
That means you prob live in either South Denver, Loveland or somewhere way east, all of which suck wayyyy more than Boulder.

If you're in pretty much any larger city / urban place anywhere on earth, it's New York people are most impressed with. Elsewhere, it's usually one of the "tropical" seeming places. Hawaii, California (everything is considered LA, warm/sunny, bikinis etc), Florida. I was born and raised in Florida and lived much of my life after 18 in Texas. Now living mainly in Europe the last 5 years, people are very impressed when they hear I am from Florida, and almost always incredulous over why on earth I would ever leave it. When they hear Texas, they ask if I was a cowboy and rode a horse. Which for 4 years in fact I was and did, for a living.
Basically the rest of the world doesn't know or care anything about the USA except for what they've seen of cinema NYC, Baywatch, Miami Vice, and John Wayne movies. Frankly I envy their ignorance.
This is accurate.
However, many foreigners I've met have a negative view of California. They've visited LA (Venice Beach, Hollywood etc) and hated it. And they think that the rest of California is like this.
San Francisco seems to be kinda popular with the foreigners though.
I'll agree with this. It is insane how ignorant people are about the US. I'm always surprised when people tell me they are taking a three week trip to the US and are just visiting NYC, Miami, and Vegas. When I tell people I'm from Pennsylvania (certainly not the coolest place in the us to be from), I always get asked about vampires or Amish.
If you're on the east coast, the coolest place to be from is California. If you're on the west coast, probably NYC.
from a non-USA perspective probably Los Angeles
This absolutely makes Seattle the least coolest place in human history. Wow.

Sorry, it's local slang for Seattle.
I wonder if they have a secret handshake, too.

It is congested on the roads but Jeffco also has an amazing amount of open space and trails.

NYC, San Fran, La Jolla, Santa Monica, Malibu, Aspen, Jackson Hole, non-Honolulu HI,
Second Tier: Boulder, Seattle, Chicago (now), Miami, Portland (now), Nashville (now), Austin (now), Bend/Bellingham/Asheville/etc
This is the best list so far. My thoughts:
-I've never heard of La Jolla (looked it up, San DIego is obviously sick) so it makes it less cool if not everyone knows about it.
-Disagree on NYC. Some people will love it but a lot of people in the South will just think you're a damn Yankee (I'm from the South).
-Agree on Aspen, Jackson Hole, Malibu.
-Seattle and Portland should be in the first tier.
-Bend/Bellingham/Asheville shouldn't be on the list. Asheville is fine but if someone is not from the South then they won't care.
Never heard of La Jolla?? Where have you been?

Doesn't it rain a lot in Seattle? It's not cool to be damp.
To be clear- I wasn't asking "Where is the coolest place to live?" I was asking "Where is the coolest place to be able to say you're from?"
Some random town in maine or michigan hardly qualifies, even if it is a nice place to live.
I lived in Detroit (which as its very special of flavor of cool if you say that you are from there), Boston, for a short time in New Hampshire and Springfield, IL, and for quite awhile now in Florida. Florida might not be super cool for us, but I am getting way better reaction when abroad saying FL, than any of the other ones. BTW, LA might sound cool, but that is easily fixed by a quick visit there.
